Inspector General of Police, IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to take over investigations into the alleged assault of visual artist Ibrahim Mahama by a police taskforce.

The directive follows a meeting on Thursday, March 26, 2026, between the Police Management Board and Ibrahim Mahama.

Speaking to the media, the Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, said a lot of investigations have already been carried out since the incident, including a visit by the police command to the scene.

“As we speak, the Regional Command has done a lot of investigations so far. They've taken statements from Ibrahim and his team. They have visited the scene. They visited to check up on him and his residents,” she said.

“He has directed, among other things, that the CID, that is the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters, take over the investigation,” she indicated.

ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi further detailed that the IGP has directed an expedited investigation into the matter, emphasising the urgency to resolve the case promptly.

“He has also directed the Director General Police Professional Standards Bureau to expedite action on the investigation,” she noted.

She assured the public of the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to conducting a thorough investigation and ensuring that any culpable officers are held accountable.

“Our assurance to Ibrahim Mahama is that the police are willing to work with him throughout the investigation process so we get to the end of this and we have assured him of a thorough investigation,” she assured.

“IGP also recounted to the police how much the police have been useful to him [Mahama] in his business, assisting them and he has been a friend of the police so, its unfortunate this incident came up but the investigation will continue and any persons found culpable will be taken through the due process of the law,” she added.

The incident reportedly occurred on March 21, 2026, involving a group identified as the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team commonly known as the ‘Black Maria.’

However, the team, led by Abdul Bawa Jalil, has denied any involvement in the alleged assault, insisting that its personnel were not engaged in the incident.
