I did not detect the break marks of accused car - Witness

Accra, April 18, GNA – Police Sergeant Christian Koda of the Central Motor Transport Traffic Unit (MTTU) on Friday told an Accra High Court that he did not detect the break marks of the Thomas Osei's car at the accident scene.

He said even though the point of impact of the accused car was marked, it had to be pushed away from the place to make way for other road users.

Sergeant Koda was testifying at the ongoing trial of Thomas Osei, the man who drove into the President's car in Accra on November 14, this year and tendered in evidence the sketch and its keys to the court.

Osei, 51, a businessman, has been charged with five counts; use of narcotic drugs and failing to change ownership of the vehicle, dangerous driving, negligently causing harm, driving under the influence of alcohol, failing to give way to Presidential siren.

The President escaped unhurt.

Osei has pleaded not guilty to all the charges levelled against him and he is in police custody.

Mr. Kwame Boafo Akuffo, Counsel for Osei raised an objection to the question from prosecution whether he had heard the siren of the Presidential convoy.

In an answer to questions from Mr Akuffo during cross-examination, Sergeant Koda said the Policeman on duty at the Opeibea intersection told him that they marked the accident spot with red paint.

He said even though it was not unusual for the Police to carry paint to their duty post it happened that there was painter around and some was used to mark the accident scene.

Asked whether his statement did not contradict earlier testimonies by Police Constable Seth Frimpong that they had marked the accident spot with stone Sergeant Koda insisted that constable Frimpong told him that he used red paint to mark the place and he also saw it himself when he got to the scene.

The case was adjourned to April 28,this month.
