Four remanded for alleged rape and robbery

Accra, Oct. 5, GNA - Four persons who allegedly took turns to rape a woman after robbing a household of their belongings at Oyarifa in Accra on Wednesday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

They are Usif Abdulrahman, a labourer, Abdulai Aliu, a trader, Agyeman Badu, unemployed and Kwasi Tawiah aka Taller, a driver.

The accused persons, who were without legal representations, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to rob, robbery and rape,

The court presided over by Mr Eric Kyei Baffour, remanded them into Police custody to re-appear on October 21.

The Prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Reindorf Agyemang, said the complainant whose name has been withheld, was a banker residing at Oyarifa with his family.

He said the accused persons resided at different parts of Accra, and on August 7 this year, at dawn, while the complainant and family were asleep, the accused persons and their accomplices now on the run besieged the house.

ASP Agyemang said the accused persons armed with guns, sticks, hacksaw blade and a crow bar, forced open the glass door leading to the living room and ransacked the five bed-roomed house.

In the process, the prosecution said, the accused persons robbed the complainant of six mobile phones, quantities of wax prints, a wedding ring, Sony digital camera, ignition key to a 4X4 Honda vehicle and GHc400 cash.

ASP Agyemang said not satisfied with their booty, they took turns to rape an inmate of the house through the anus and vagina.

He said during the morning of the same day, a report was made to the Adenta Police for investigations, and on September 8, this year, the Police had a tip off that Badu had been arrested among some armed robbers who had been robbing and raping people at Oyarifa, Adenta and its environs.

The prosecutor said Badu was picked up and during interrogation, admitted the offence.

He said when the Police went to Badu’s house at Glefe in Accra, a pump action gun was retrieved, and he led the Police to arrest Abdulraman and Aliu, while Tawiah was arrested at his hideout following a tip off.

ASP Agyemang said the complainant identified Tawiah as one of the robbers who robbed them.

He said the accused persons in their cautioned statements, admitted the offence and mentioned Demio, Noah and Papa who are now at large, as accomplices.

Investigations are on-going to arrest the accomplices.
