Footballer remanded for assaulting referee

Juaso, (Ash) Feb 9, GNA - Prince Boakye, a 21-year-old footballer of Asfa Sakyi Football Club at Juaso in the Ashanti Region was on Tuesday remanded in prison custody by the Juaso Circuit court for assaulting referee Emmanuel Ampiah during a Second Division football match.

Boakye pleaded guilty to the charge but the case was deferred to February 20.

Police Chief Inspector Kippo Iddrisu Mahama, prosecuting, told the Court presided over by Mr Jacob Boon that referee Ampiah officiated a match between Asfa Sakyi and Owerriman Football club at Juaso last Saturday.

He said around the 70th minute of the game, Boakye who was on the reserve bench of his team, for no apparent reason ran onto the field and gave the referee (complainant) a hard knock after he accused took to his heels.

The prosecutor said the Police personnel on duty managed to apprehend the footballer and after investigation charged him with the offence.
