Five remanded for robbing mobile phones

Five people were on Friday remanded by an Accra Circuit Court for conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

Anthony Galley and Akwesi Aikins, both traders, Amewugah Kumafu, labourer, Richard Tenyuie, a driver’s mate, and Richard Korley, an auto electrician were said to have conspired and robbed one Alhassan Mufdi of two iPhones worth GHC 3,000.00 and a Nokia phone worth GHC300.00.

They all pleaded not guilty to the charges but were remanded by the Court to reappear on May 11.

Police Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu told the Court that the complainant, Alhassan is a student of the Islamic University, Adjiringanor, while the accused persons are residents of Agbogbloshie Brazil, a suburb of Accra.

He said on April 16, at about midnight the complainant and his friends were in front of their student hostel at Adjiringanor snapping pictures with their phones when they were suddenly attacked by the accused persons who were having guns and cutlasses.

The prosecution said they threatened to shoot the complainant or slash his body with the cutlass if he did not give them the phones, so the complainant handed over the three phones to them.

Police Chief Inspector Adu said the complainant later alerted his friends and they started tracking the phones with a tracking device but were unsuccessful. He told the Court that a report was then made to the police by the complainant and he identified Anthony who had been brought to the charge office on a different robbery case as one of the robbers who robbed him.

Chief Inspector Adu said Anthony admitted the offence and led the police to arrest the four accomplices.

He said during interrogation, Amewugah told the police that on April 16, he received an iPhone from Moses and Serlom who are both on the run, and sent it to his brother-in-law whom he convinced that the phone was his and that he should keep it and get him an amount of GH? 200.00. Police Chief Inspector Adu told the Court that his brother-in-law was consequently arrested and the iPhone belonging to the complainant was retrieved.
