Farmer jailed for assaulting an old man

Begoro (E/R), May 15, GNA - A 25-year-old farmer, Kofi Asare, has been sentenced to 24 months' imprisonment in hard labour by the Begoro District Court for assaulting a 73-year-oldman, Opanin Kofi Appiah. He pleaded guilty.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector William Kwasi Nkrumah of Begoro, told the court presided over by Mr Robert Djan that on December 14, last year, the accused was armed with a matchet and marched to opanyin Appiah's house, complaining that the household had lately been gossiping about him.

Inspector Nkrumah said as opanyin Appiah was calming him down, the accused pounced on him and bit off the old man's upper lips. He said the assault drew the attention of other tenants, who rushed to the scene to save the old man and Asare took to his heels but was arrested and sent to the police.

Inspector Nkrumah said opanyin Appiah was rushed to the Begoro Government Hospital and was treated and discharged.
