Farmer jailed fives years for damage to property, threatening

Akyem Swedru, June 9, GNA - Kofi Okyere, farmer, 22, at Betenase in the Birim North District, who destroyed his uncle's wife's property and threatened to kill his uncle, was on Thursday jailed five years by the Akim Swedru Circuit Court.

Okyere pleaded guilty to a charge of causing unlawful damage but not guilty to a charge of threatening. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Ben Osei Kwadwo, told the court presided over by Mr Edward Kwame Bosompem Apenkwa that on May 8, this year, Okyere, armed with a cutlass, went looking for his uncle Opanin Kofi Atta in his house. He said Okyere met his uncle's wife Abena Kyerewah, in the house who informed him that her husband had left for his cocoa farm.

The prosecution said Okyere in anger, went to Abena's hencoop and killed her fowls, 20-day-old chickens, broke 20 eggs and later destroyed the entire coop. He then went to his uncle's farm swearing to kill him and when the uncle saw him coming in a threatening manner he took to his heels. A report was then made to the police and Okyere was arrested and charged with the offence.
