Farmer jailed 15 years for defilement

Techiman (B/A) June 2, GNA - A circuit court at Techiman has sentenced Kwasi Adjei, a 19-year-old farmer of Kintampo to 15 years in jail for defiling a 10-year-old primary school pupil. Adjei pleaded guilty to the charge of defiling the pupil in a thicket at Kintampo.

Sentencing him, Mr Erasmus Gyinae, the presiding judge expressed concern about the increasing number of rape and defilement cases at Kintampo, Atebubu, Wenchi and Techiman.

He said he had given the long prison sentence to Adjei to serve as a deterrent to like-minded persons.

Police Chief Inspector Sampson Y. Jebuni told the court that in May this year the victim fell sick and could not attend school. Chief Insp. Jebuni said while resting under a tree, Adjei questioned her as to why she did not go to school.

He said when the victim decided to attend to nature's call, the accused followed her and dragged her into a nearby bush and forcibly had sex with her.

Chief Insp. Jebuni said when the victim shouted for help, Adjei managed to escape but some neighbours identified him as the offender. The victim was later rushed to the hospital. The matter was reported to the Women and Juvenile Unit (WAJU) of the Police at Wenchi.
