Farmer jailed 14 years for defiling a five-year-old girl

Akyem Swedru, April 19, GNA - An Akyem Swedru Circuit Court on Wednesday sentenced Kwabena Sein, 39, a farmer to 14 years imprisonment on his own plea for defiling a five-year-old girl at Akyem Aduasa in the Birim South District.

Police Chief Inspector Ben Osei Kwadwo told the court presided over by Mr Justice Edward Kwame Bosompem Apenkwah that a guardian of the victim reported the incident to the police.

He said on March 6, this year at about 1000 hours during the 50th anniversary celebration of Ghana's Independence, the accused visited the house of the victim and met her alone.

The prosecutor said the accused lured the victim to the market, bought her some cooked rice and sent her to his house and defiled the victim.

He said after the incident, accused sent the victim home and warned her not to disclose her ordeal to anyone otherwise she would die. The prosecution said three days later, the victim who started feeling pains in her private part informed her guardian about the incident and when accused was confronted, he admitted the offence and a report was made to the police.

The accused before sentence was passed in tears pleaded with the court to be lenient with him since "he did not know what compelled him to commit the act."
