Farmer charged for killing a suspected thief

Bibiani (W/R), Dec 14, GNA - A 23-year old farmer, who shot and killed a suspected cocoa beans thief, at Ohiampeanika, near Bibiani, has been remanded in prison custody, by a Bibiani Magistrates' Court. The plea of Yaya Fuseini was not taken and he would re-appear on January 10, 2011.

Police Chief Detective Inspector Alex Asamoah told the court, presided over by Mr Osei Kofi Amoako, that the deceased, Akwasi Nkansa-Pra, is a native of Bibiani but has no fixed place of abode. The accused on the other hand is a farmer at Ohiampeanika, who had noticed that for sometime now, someone had been stealing his cocoa beans. Police Chief Detective Inspector Asamoah said the landlord of Fuseini noticed that some bags of dried cocoa beans packed in his house had been stolen.

He therefore engaged the accused to watch over the remaining beans, heaped on a mat just outside the house. The prosecution said on Sunday, December 5, at about 0200 hours, Fuseini saw Nkansah-Pra loading some of the cocoa beans into a sack and ordered him stop but he took to his heels. Fuseini, who was armed with a gun, shot him in the shoulder but he managed to run some distance but fell and died. The accused reported himself to the police and was arrested. 14 Dec. 10
