Farmer 38, lynched for killing father, son

Agogoso (Ash), Sept. 8, GNA -- A 38-year-old farmer believed to be insane, who went berserk, shooting an 85-year-old man, Idilisu Moshie dead and also slashing his 40-year-old son, Salifu Moshie to death, has been killed by an angry mob in an apparent revenge at Agogoso near Nyinahin in the Atwima-Mponua District.

George Mensah also inflicted cutlass wounds on Madam Hawa Idilisu and Safula Idilisu, both daughters and sisters of the murdered victims respectively.

They are currently on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and Nyinahin Government Hospital and are said to be responding to treatment.

Narrating her ordeal to the Ghana News Agency at her bedside at the Nyinahin Hospital, Safula said on Monday at about 1600 hours, when she was working in her farm she saw Mensah also in the farm destroying her foodstuffs.

She said Mensah who took offence when she questioned him took a big club and started hitting her.

Fearing for her life, Safula shouted for help and her brother Salifu, who was also working on his farm, emerged to rescue the sister. She said her brother, who wielded a gun and a cutlass put them aside to wrench the club from his sister's assailant.

After Mensah had been disarmed of the club, he dashed for Salifu's gun and shot him killing him instantly.

Safula said Mensah then rushed to their cottage met Moshie, their 85-year-old father and butchered him to death also with Salifu's cutlass.

Still not satisfied, Mensah also turned to Hawa, her sister and inflicted several cutlass wounds on her and fled the village but was found dead with gunshot wound later by a search party. Mensah's father's corn mill was also set ablaze by the mob at Akantansu-Nkwanta, near Agogoso.

Meanwhile, the Nyinahin police are investigating the case. Mr Isaac Kwame Asiamah, Member of Parliament (MP) for the area and a delegation from the District Assembly led by Mr Wilberforce Owusu-Ansah, the District Chief Executive have visited the bereaved family and expressed their sympathies and condolences to them.

The DCE called for calm and peace to prevail in the area and pledged the Assembly's support towards the burial and funeral rites of the victims.
