Eleven suspects arrested by Tema Regional police

Tema, Jan. 24, GNA - Mr Daniel Odai, Assistant Commissioner of police (ACP) and Tema Regional Police Commander on Monday pledged to rid Tema Municipality of criminals.

He made the pledge at a press briefing on the arrest of three armed robbers on the Accra-Aflao road, six land guards at new Dawhenya and a car stealing syndicate at Tema.

ACP Odai said at dawn on January 20, this year, a group of armed robbers barricaded the Accra-Aflao road between Dawa and Tsopoh where they attacked a Toyota Hiace bus driven by Semanu Attipoe, with nine passengers on board.

The Regional Commander said they robbed the driver of 820,000 cedis, Miss Joyce Dornyo, 6.5 million cedis, 360 CFA and two mobile phones; Miss Rose Baafi also lost 3,000 Euros, 120 CFA and a mobile phone.

He said Miss Joana Osei-Mensah also lost three million cedis and a mobile phone while Mr Godwin Tetteku a student of the University of Ghana lost 800,000 cedis.

ACP Odai said although the robbers escaped before the police arrived at the scene, information led to the arrest of Abubakari Ibrahim alias Bubey and Mohamadu Yaro at their hide out at Dawa. He said a search on Ibrahim revealed an amount of 8,1 million cedis, 266,995 CFA, two mobile phones while 63,200 cedis and a wrapper of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp was found on Yaro. ACP Odai said Ibrahim told the police during interrogation that other accomplices were; one Reuben who had left for Nigeria and Kadri who had gone to Asutuare.

The Tema Regional Commander said Ibrahim told the police that together with Reuben and Kadri were harboured by Ali Fulan a Malian and his son Yaro.

He said the suspects would appear before court soon. On the arrest of the land guards, ACP Odai said their activities had increased at Pramsiam and Dawhenya New sites.

He said, on October 28, last year, some land guards namely; Nicholas Nyavor, Nii Martey Annang, Tidjani Darpoh, Nii Annang Darpoh, Ibrahim Martey Darpoh, Nana Osei Amankwah and Bismark Akakpo attacked members of the Dangme West District Assembly Task Force who went to Dawhenya New Site to stop illegal developers.

ACP Odai said the police managed to arrest six of the land guards with the exception of Ibrahim Martey Darpoh who escaped. On the car stealing syndicate, ACP Odai said on January 10 this year, the police had information that three people were offering a white Toyota Corolla saloon car for sale.

He said the police arrested them and retrieved the car. ACP Odai said two of them namely; Tahiru Adama 28, and Peter Dennis 47, admitted the offence while two other persons were yet to be apprehended.

He said two number plates with registration numbers DV4624 and VO120LA05 were found in the car and were being verified by the police.
