Education directorate declares war on teacher-absenteeism

The Assin-Municipal Director of Education, Ms. Enyonam Afi Amafuga, has vowed decisive action against teachers who stay out of the classroom without permission.

This amid poor academic performance of schools in the municipality in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Six of the junior high schools (JHS) including Nyankomasi M/A, Gold Coast Camp M/A, Assin-Fosu Catholic ‘A’ and ‘B’, Bereku-Nikyiso and Nduaso M/A scored zero per cent pass in the 2015 examination.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Assin-Fosu, he said teacher absenteeism and poor supervision were to blame for the poor results and underlined their determination to get things right.

Ms. Amefugah said the Municipal Education Oversight Committee had put in place measures to strengthen discipline through effective supervision in the schools.

She also spoke of incentive packages including prize rewards for hardworking and dedicated teachers.

The expectation was that teachers posted to the area would focus on the job of helping their pupils to perform to live their dreams.

Ms. Amefugah urged parents to spend quality time with the children and take keen interest in their education – monitor their academic progress through regular visit to the schools.
