Driver held over the death 76 year old woman

A 27- year- old driver has been put before an Accra Magistrate court for killing a 76- year- old woman in her residence at Kwabenya, Accra.

Yaw Anokye Frimpong and one Ebenezer who is now at large are being held over a conspiracy charge. The two were said to have murdered Ms Joana Hessey in their bid to steal her vehicle in 2010.

Anokye has additionally been charged with murder. His plea has been reserved by the court and he has been remanded into prison custody to reappear on October 5.

This was after the court presided over by Mr Ebenezer Kweku Ansah was told that the Police are still investigating the matter.

Anokye is also being held for the murder of two African Americans at Fihinkra near Akwamufie in the Eastern Region.

Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Adjei said the deceased Ms Hessey lived at Kwabenya with his two house helps.

According to ASP Adjei, Anokye lived with his father at Asofan, a suburb of Accra.

In June 2010, prosecution said Anokye took his father’s car for repairs at Kwabenya where he met Ebenezer, an apprentice sprayer.

ASP Adjei said the two accused persons became friends and hatched a plot to rob the deceased of her Toyota Corrolla.

On July 2, 2010 during the World Cup Football match between Ghana and Uruguay, the two house helps went to watch the football match.

Prosecution said Anokye and Ebenezer took advantage of the absence of the house helps, scaled the wall after damaging an electric fence and attacked the deceased.

According to prosecution, the two robbed Ms Hessey of unspecified amount, jewellery and bunch of keys and brutally murdered her.

Prosecution said luck however eluded them as they were unable to open the main gate and drive away the vehicle as planned.

The following day, the prosecutor said the body of Ms Hessey was discovered by the two house help and matter was reported to the Police who deposited Ms Hessey’s body at the Police Hospital.

On July 6, 2010, Dr Marcia Maria Cruzeley conducted autopsy and gave the interim cause of death as Acute Respiratory.

In May, Anokye was arrested for murder of the two African Americans at Fihankra, a community near Akwamufie.

During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and stated that he was responsible for the murder of Ms Hessey and led a team of the Homicide Investigators to the scene.

Prosecution said Anokye claimed that he and Ebenezer, now at large, agreed to rob the deceased of her Toyota Corolla and convert it to a taxi so he (Anokye) would drive and used the proceeds to set up a shop for Ebenezer.

According to prosecution, Anokye would later own the vehicle.
