Driver arrested for attempting to give Indian hemp to an inmate

Accra, Sept. 20, GNA – Paul Ayamga, a Madina trotro driver, has been arrested by the Madina District Police for attempting to present a polythene bag containing leaves suspected to be Indian hemp to an inmate in the cell.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Madina District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) David Eklu said Ayamga purchased a number of sachets of water in a polythene bag with the intention of presenting them to his friend at the cell.

When he arrived at the Police Station he was asked by the Counter Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) to move behind the counter to present the water to Wale Fuseini, the friend in the cell.

Whilst giving the water to the friend, the NCO noticed a transparent polythene bag compressed with leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, hidden under the sachets of water.

When Ayamga was asked how he came by it, he said it was Fuseini who asked him to buy the item for him. The police quickly arrested Ayamga.

According to Commander Eklu, the leaves would be sent for forensic examination. He said if they were confirmed to be “wee”, the culprit would face prosecution.

The Station Officer, Chief Inspector Stephen Buadu said items such as cigarettes, Indian hemp, cocaine, heroine, alcohol drink, and mobile-phones could not be given to a suspect in Police cell.

Chief Inspector Buadu also warned that even if any inmate of the cell was sick, the public had no right to purchase any prophylactics for their for treatment.

He added that it was the responsibility of the Police to send inmates who were sick to hospital for medical attention.
