Court sentences herdsman to death for murder

Tamale, Nov. 13, GNA - A 24-year-old herdsman, Yakubu Bello has been=

sentenced to death by hanging by a seven-member jury constituted by a Tam= ale High Court for murdering his colleague Mahamadu Fulani. The court presided over by Mr Justice Laurent Mensah, sentenced the convict on a unanimous decision of guilty for murder. Prosecuting, Senior State Attorney, Mr Salia Abdul-Quddus told the court that the convict and the deceased were herdsmen employed by a cattl= e owner at Fulanipe, a village near Salaga in the East Gonja District of th= e Northern Region. He said at about 0530 hours on March 2, 2004 the cattle owner visite= d his Kraal and noticed that the deceased was lying in a pool of blood. Mr Abdul-Quddus said the cattle owner and his sons mounted a search for the convict whom they arrested while trying to escape from the Kraal. He said Bello who was handed over to the police confessed to the cri= me. The prosecution said the convict told the police that he killed the deceased for stealing his "juju" (magic potent) and GH¢10.
