Court remands robber for another robbery raid

An alleged member of a robbery gang that attacked and robbed traders of their monies and shot at a watchman near the Kumasi Central Market, has been remanded into prison custody by a Circuit Court.

Abubakari Eliasu, 22, popularly known as Baba Abu is facing charges of conspiracy and robbery.

He pleaded not guilty and is to re-appear on Friday, May 4.

Two of his accomplices, Tijani Abubakar and Majid Sulemana, are already serving 25 years each in jail.

Police Chief Inspector, Isaac Mensah Apenteng told the court presided over by Justice William Boampong that, Eliasu together with the other members of the gang, armed with locally-manufactured pistols, on February 6, raided the “Doctor Mensah” area near the central market at dawn where they robbed a number of traders of their monies and other valuables.

They also shot at one Nii Okai, a watchman.

The prosecution said the watchman and another robbery victim, Toffick Ahmed, who lost his cash of GH¢690.00 and cellular phone to the robbers, later made a formal report to the police.

Investigations led to the arrest of Abubakar and Sulemana who mentioned Eliasu as the one who shot at the watchman.

Meanwhile two remaining members of the gang known only as Handam and Abodam are on the run and the police have mounted a search for them.**
