Court acquits and discharges house help

An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday acquitted and discharged one Leticia Oppong, a house help for alleged abetment of crime.

Leticia was accused of aiding and abetting with one Emmanuel and two others, all at large, to rob her employer Mrs Regina Rose Abban, a Pensioner.

The court presided over by Justice Francis Obiri, delivering the judgment, said the prosecution had not been able to make a case against the accused person.

He said the confession statement tendered by the prosecution witness, purported to have been made by the accused person could not be relied on.

The Judge said he was unable to convict the accused person, because prosecution had not connected the accused person to the crime.

“I, therefore, acquit and discharge the accused person for want of prosecution,” he added.

Chief Inspector K. Adu told the court that, Leticia aided and abetted with others to rob her madam of £3,500, GH¢ 600, a mobile phone and unspecified amount of money in an envelope.

He said Emmanuel and his accomplices intentionally tied the accused person in the complainant’s room to avoid the accused being suspected for her involvement.

“A report was made to the police and the following morning the accused person met with Emmanuel and collected her share of GH¢ 1,000.00" he added.

He said a witness in the case was brought into the house to stay there since there was no man in the house, and later became a friend of the accused person.

He said the accused person allegedly confided in him and confessed to him that she arranged the alleged robbery.
