Carwasher sentenced to three years imprisonment for stealing

Kumasi, Jan. 14, GNA - A Kumasi circuit court on Thursday sentenced a carwasher to three years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing four million cedis belonging to a forestry officer. Eric Osei Assibey, 23, pleaded guilty to the charge.

Police Chief Inspector Mathew Asante told the court, presided over by Mr Ernest Yao Obimpeh that on January 2, this year, Assibey picked the money from the vehicle of one James Buabeng, a forestry officer who had brought the vehicle to a washing bay at Atonsu where the convict also lived.

He said when the complainant brought the vehicle for washing, he left the washing bay and returned later to find out that the four million cedis he left in the vehicle was missing. Chief Inspector Asante said the forestry officer therefore reported the case to the Asokwa police who arrested Assibey and Kwakye Boakye who washed the vehicle.

He said the accused confessed stealing three million cedis of the money and spent only 170,000 cedis out of it without the knowledge of Boakye.

The police, the prosecution said retrieved 2.8 million cedis from the accused and was therefore charged with the offence.
