Cable thief jailed for 24 months

Accra, Nov. 24, GNA - A 22-year-old driver's mate who stole and burnt telephone cables worth 22.8 million cedis belonging to Ghana Telecom was on Friday sentenced to 24 months' imprisonment in hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court.

Derrick Amewude pleaded guilty to stealing and he was convicted accordingly.

Chief Inspector John K Anim told the court that at about 0230 hours on November 16, the complainant, Mr Samuel Yaw Awasa, woke up to urinate and saw Amewude and another, now at large burning some cables along the Dome-Taifa railway line.

The prosecution said Mr Awasa, who had laid ambush saw the accused person and his accomplice carry the cables in a black sack. The complainant raised the alarm and he and others arrested Amewude and handed him over to the Achimota-Mile 7 Police station.
