Businessman remanded in prison custody for fraud

Sunyani(B/A), May 02, GNA - Mr Albert Zoogah, presiding over Sunyani Magistrate's court 'B' last Wednesday remanded Bawa Yussif also known as Mohammed Abdulai into prison custody for attempting to dupe Mr Maxwell Amoako Atta, Manager of Sunyani Mobil filling station of 500 million cedis.

The plea of the accused for possessing forged documents, forgery and attempt to commit crime was not taken and would reappear on May 3. Police Chief Inspector I. K. Baafi, prosecuting told the court that on April 24 this year, the accused who claimed to be a businessman in Kumasi came to the filling station and requested from the attendants to see the complainant.

He said accused showed to the complainant an identification card bearing the name Mohammed Abu indicating that the accused was a project coordinator at the head office of Mobil in Accra. The Prosecutor said the accused told the complainant that he was there to know their problems and assist them to solve them. He said the accused expressed satisfaction with the complainant's work and gave him (complainant) a Mobil company certificate of acceptance.

Police Chief Inspector Baafi said the accused then demanded 500 million cedis from the complainant to enable him (accused) supply fuel to the station.

He said the complainant on his way to bring the money to the accused rang the managing director of the company in Accra to ascertain the truth about the matter but was told that the company did not know the accused.

The prosecutor said when the complainant returned to the station his wife informed him that whilst he was away the accused called someone in Kumasi that they should be ready because he would soon reach there with 300 million cedis.

He said based on his wife's information, the complainant alerted the police and the accused was arrested and after investigations charged with the offence.
