Businessman appears before court for issuing false cheque

Sekondi, Jan. 8 - GNA- Alex Nyarkey, a businessman, on Monday appeared before a Sekondi District Magistrate's Court for fictitious trading and issuing false cheque.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted 50 million cedis bail to re-appear on February 8, 2007.

Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Adu Kyeremeh said the accused lived at Sunyani where he has a Pharmacy Shop.

He said sometime in January last year, he went to see the accountant of Kendicks Pharmacy in Takoradi and ordered assorted drugs amounting to 95,445,550.00 cedis.

Sergeant Kyeremeh said the accused paid for the drugs with a post-dated Agriculture Development Bank cheque.

He said the Bank dishonoured the cheque when the accountant presented it on the required date.

Sergeant Kyeremeh said the accused had by then sold half of the drugs he purchased but did not make any payment to the accountant. He said the accountant instructed a representative of Kendicks Pharmacy at Sunyani and Kumasi to collect th e remaining drugs amounting to 45,995,910 cedis from the accused. Sergeant Kyeremeh said the accountant reported the accused to the Police and he was arrested after several attempts to collect the money failed. He said during investigations, the accused paid 11,000,000 cedis to the accountant, leaving an amount of 35,955,910 cedis to be paid.
