The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has presented 300 body bags to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service (GPS).
The donation followed a request from the MTTD after it ran out of stock due to the alarming rise in road crashes and fatalities. Between January and July 2025 alone, 1,730 people lost their lives in road accidents, a figure described as deeply troubling, with both emotional and economic consequences.
Presenting the items on behalf of the Board and the Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr Abiba Zakariah, the Acting Deputy Commissioner of Insurance, Bernard Ohemeng-Baah, urged motorists and road users to be more cautious.
He described the rising number of deaths in the first seven months of the year as “really disturbing.”
Receiving the items on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of Administration of the GPS, COP/Dr David Agyemang Agyem, expressed the Service’s gratitude to the NIC and appealed to other corporate entities to extend similar support.
He further urged motorists to exercise greater caution and diligence to help reduce the needless loss of lives on Ghana’s roads.
Ohemeng-Baah emphasised that the NIC remains committed to supporting the Police Service.
He also took the opportunity to debunk the perception that insurance companies hardly pay claims, revealing that insurers in Ghana pay an average of about GH¢10 million in claims daily.
He therefore encouraged the public to take insurance seriously, describing it as the surest safety net in times of mishaps.
He further noted that while insurers always hope for zero accidents, many crashes result from preventable human behaviors such as overspeeding, reckless overtaking, drowsy driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
He reiterated the NIC’s commitment to supporting the Police Service in reducing road carnage and ensuring that victims receive adequate compensation through legitimate insurance claims.
Other senior police officers present included DCOP Gabriel Prince Waabu, Director-General of the MTTD, along with other top officials of the Service.
Senior NIC officials in attendance were Stella Jonah, Head of Market Strategy and Innovation, and Mawuli Zogbenu, Head of Public Affairs and Communications.
