If Ghana has a social responsibility clauses in its constitution companies would have helped to developed Ghana. This clause is lacking in the current Constitution and we desperately need a review on this. Many Big players like UTC were part of Ghana economic fabric for a long time but what legacy did they leave behind for us to cherish apart from its old dilapidated buildings If Govt charge organisations /companies to be responsible for for providing public toilets with hand washing basins, libraries and building a community centre as a token of contribitons in every community we would have seen more developments in these areas by now. There was none and we left it to individual companies /organisation to do their bit on social responsibility for a community so they also took the message very causally . As a result nothing was done. In my community Sainbury's wanted to build a new supermarket in our town. So the community got together and asked sainbury's to build us a Big Purposeful community centre with a small police station within it. yes they built it but we as a community are managing the maintenace by using the vune for wedding , people hire the venue for any occasion. We run it as a business for the community only. This is what communities in Ghana must endeavour to do. Before any company moves in the leaders of that town must have a discussion with the community and list what you would like from that organisation/company.
