When will implement policies that destroy us. Here we are with a Ghanaian car manufacturing company building cars for our own consumption. Instead of encouraging the people of Ghana to nurturing this company so one day we can become the major car manufacturing country in the sub region or even on the continent, we come out with policies that destroys or kill completely local initiatives and innovations. What is wrong with us at all? If this how we are going regulate the factories we create under one district one factory then we are already doomed as there will not much chance for their sustainability. The word to the wise.....

You see how everything revolves around mobile technology with Internet of Things? Support for high-value smartphones is a market for the long haul. Think of the latent possibilities. People value their high end devices(N380k, $600-$1000 for phones & rising) they send it by DHL to & fro Abuja. Is it for peanuts? Still think it's only for Lebanese & Chinese to run cool centers in your cities & reap alone? Or for low-skill street boys?

Over 40% of duties are paid at the harbor.I'm paying over $20,000.00(GhC 90,000.00) of duties because total invoice of my goods is $50,000.00.

2.there must be a flat rate on imported cars
2. The idea of making the embassies effective on this issue is very prudent but it will work perfectly if we have a flat rate.
after receiving the bill of loading from the shipping company , use it to go to the embassy pay your flat rate duty for a clearance certificate , post the clearance certificate to your Agent or you go there by yourself, handed it to the customs , they show you your car then off you go.
with this brilliant idea those corrupt elements at the port will try to frustrate it implementation because if it happens money will never short change in their hands

How vehicles are valued for duty purpose is totally wrong. They take the value of the vehicle as if it is new and use the age of the vehicle to arrive at the value.Which means if I bought a second hand car for 2000 pounds and the cost of a new one is 10000 it is the latter cost which will be taken for duty purposes.Absolute garbage. How can you value an old car as a new one and use its age to depreciate it for duty purposes?Duty must be based on how much the second hand vehicle was bought in the country of origin and not what the authorities feel it should be valued.A second hand car bought for 500 pounds stands the chance of being valued for 8000 pounds just because a new one costs 8000 pounds. This is unacceptable. This largely explains why vehicle duties are unacceptably high in Ghana.

Calculating the duty of a vehicle is an internationally agreed formula adopted by customs agencies throughout the world so changing it will be next to impossible. And they chose it for a good reason. If you go on the premise of determining the duty of a vehicle based on it's age, then someone would argue that they picked up their car for free so the duty on it should be nil. That, my friend, would be absolutely unacceptable :)

At least,Burgers who have used their private cars for some years abroad should be allowed to clear one car for free. There's a difference between somebody who has brought his own car home for personal use to those who import cars for sales.I'm sure Nana Addo knows how Burgers suffer to clear only 1 private car just like he knows how spare parts dealers pay for duties in the port.So why favour the spare parts dealers and squeeze Burgers?Thank you.

The government should rather consider increasing the duty on private vehicles, especially the gas guzzlers, and reduce duties on commercial vehicles. If you can afford to drive around in v12, v8 and v6 cars, you should equally enjoy the privileges of paying hefty duties and taxes on them. I love the power and sound of v8 engines but they are an unnecessary drain on our scarce national resources so those who use it for pleasure should pay through the nose for them. Also, reducing duties on private vehicles would mean affordability for many people and the knock on effect would lead to a total gridlock of our roads, making our current traffic jams look like a child's play. Without a corresponding investment in new roads the government should resist any temptation to reduce duties until the time is right to do so.
