Clearly the bulk of the debt is from GoG, mainly installations that fail to pay their bills for energy supplied.
There should be a way to get all these installations of the grid, or reduce drastically the recurring debt component of these installations. And that is solar. As to why this has not been seriously looked at and addressed is something which defies reason.
We must at all cost get most of these installations off the grid completely. There is a company producing PV modules in Ghana here. What kind of incentives and subsidies can govt provide, to ensure such companies help achieve the strategic objectives and goals of the country, whilst ensuring Ghana meets it's climate change agreement obligations? And from the raw materials to the final product chain, how do we leverage on those opportunities within Africa to create good jobs and market access for solar energy?
Because critically, in other for this to work, at some point we would need to have dedicated power, targeted solely and fully for high end industral output, and such installations sitting there just like that, draining energy and leaving us with debt, makes absolutely no sense. There should be a deliberate policy adhered to strictly, to get GoG installations off the grid completely if possible, together with residential accomodation and other installations off the grid. Then we can get some good power for industry. There is no quick fixes to the problem and we need to start off from somewhere. And this is the appropriate time to get this going.
