*GHANA UNION OF PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS(GUPS) STRONGLY CALLS ON THE LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES MINISTER, HON. JOHN PETER AMEWU AND THE NPP GOVERNMENT TO RESCIND THE DECISION TO CLOSE DOWN THE SCHOOL OF SURVEY AND MAPPING*
The Ghana Union of professional students is a non sectarian, non partisan movement of professional students in the country. With the overriding concern of seeing to the welfare and championing the good interest of all professional students and Ghanaian students at large.
The professional Union, GUPS, is calling on the minister for Lands and Natural Resources, the NPP government and all relevant authorities to see to the reversal of the arbitrary decision by the minister to close down the Ghana School of Survey and Mapping ( GSSM).
This professional institution is the premier Survey and mapping institution in Africa, which serves as the perennial stream of knowledge for some citizens in the country who decide to venture into the field of surveying, mapping, cartographic studies inter alia. It is not for nothing that Governor Sir Gordon Guggisberg established this important institution to help train patriotic men and women to play a significant role in attaining sustainable development as a country. We strongly believe that the forbearers of this great nation will be disappointed if they came today to see the level of impunity education is being subjected to.
The minister cited some fallacious reasons that warranted this knee- jerk decision, which can not stand the test of time. "That students vandalised properties'' of a site contractor and the lands commission. Who closes down a school because, allegedly some students vandalised properties? Meanwhile if he had done due diligence to be briefed properly this abortive and totalitarian verdict would have been passed. Contrary to this vandalism claim, we the Secretariat of this professional bloc led by the National President, His Excellency Wisdom Gmayan have visited the campus to verify the veracity and authenticity of those claims, we were only comforted with a contrary situation where no vandalism as such took place. We only saw armed policemen who hijacked the class rooms to prevent students from having access to these facilities they have paid for.
We pledged our unflinching support to the press conference and were also physically present to show solidarity to these innocent colleagues whose future is about to be thrown to the dogs.
Now, as a developing nation, do we have to prioritize education or we treat it with disdain and reckless abandon? We leave the question to the good citizens of the land to answer. No serious nation would trade its education to the construction of malls or whatever, which is the reason for the sale of the land that harbours the school. Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another, so if the minister and the NPP government is oblivious of this fact then we are on a slippery slope as a country.
It is a naked fact that the four Asian Tiger or Dragon economies of Asia attained exceptionally high economic growth through Education and Industrialization, this is even as far back as the 50s and 60s. It is Regrettable For a country to tout itself as the beacon of hope and democracy in sub Saharan Africa,to be closing down professional institutions that serve the needs of society, industry and academia. This is most unfortunate and must be opposed by all legitimate means.
The NPP ideologically is a center left believing in property owning democracy, so how can you then be blocking the avenues that would give rise to responsible citizens not "spectators'' to legitimately work to own property and move the country forward?
Ben Franklin once said " If a man empties his purse into his head ;no man can take it from him. An investment on knowledge always pays the best interest'' this alone speaks in volumes that Hon. John Peter Amewu and the government is not resolved to making education especially at the tertiary level a priority.
Professional students are speaking the voice of the voiceless much in particular the myriads of vulnerable students from the poor counties of the country who wallow in abject poverty with their families, strive to pay school fees and other expenses only to be told to sleep on the streets of Accra because one minister ordered so.
These poor student are abandoned to their faith, for what they would be in the next moment GUPS, the minister and the government can not tell.
The professional student is asking, What happens to the social contract signed by these students to render them a service of education? We believe that if the minster's son or daughter was to be in this school such harsh and despotic decision would not have been taken. Now the battle lines are drawn with a poor GSSM student on one hand, standing in limbo as to whether to give up in life or not and an elite minister in government who is about shortchanging others destinies by virtue of the fact that probably the poor student parents voted the government into power. What crime did they commit to deserve this callous and insensitive treatment?
It is quite paradoxical that a government that preaches to be friendlier to the youth and students is now becoming a foe by its actions and inactions. The NPP hierarchy should call the minister to urgently reverse his decision to save the government from this national embarrassment at its apogee. His Excellency the first gentleman of the land NANA ADDO DANQUAH AKUFFO ADDO, canvassed votes through the change message, and with the extraordinary performance at the polls, it clearly indicates that students were at the heart of the change decision, which he must respect and not renege on the social contract of protecting the interest of students. This is a test case for the government to speak unequivocally its commitment to improve education in the country.
If Ghanaians can listen to change message the minister should as well be able to listen to the numerous calls on him to CHANGE his mind or decision to mortgage the dear future of some Ghanaian youth.
The worrying aspect is where lies the Faith of the students as they are evacuated from the school premises? These are potential Galamseyers, Armed robbers, prostitutes and other clandestine acts in society. The government have no measures put in place to accommodate this innocent students before this abortive decision.
We recall last year, a demonstration was carried out to put pressure on authorities to rescind their decision to sell the school land, We will not relent on taking that measure and even more drastic ones to get the right thing done for the students of this school. Thanks to the erstwhile Elorm Mawuli Kwawu led administration and some student activist, for their tremendous role last year on this same issue. The professional student is indebted to you all who supported and those who wish but couldn't.
Petitions were presented to the Parliamentary select committee on land and natural resources and other authorities.
GUPS would raise its voice once again in unmistakable chorus, we call on all professional institutions and students to come together with the necessary synergy to push this positive agenda. Through the alleyways of UPSA, GIJ,GIL,SSW,UCOMS, AUCC and all professional students across the country should see this as attack on us by the minister and we shall oppose that legitimately.
A free SHS policy would be a nightmare and an exercise in futility if we continue to lose tertiary institutions by day and night. Where are those young men and women from the free S.H.S heading towards? No where.
This "bottle'' approach by government and the minister to widen the base of education and shrink the top is pitifully pathetic and untenable. We need robust institutions to develop and this educational institutions are not an exception.
" If you are planning for a year sow rice, if you are planning for a decade plant trees, if you are planning for a lifetime educate people'' - Chinese proverb.
In conclusion, It is an indisputable fact that the minister's position on the impasse is insensitive and very regrettably. GUPS,the professional students, is calling strongly on the high office of the president of the land, The minister in charge of lands and Natural resources, Lands commission and all relevant authorities to expedite action to play effective roles to rescind this excruciating decision to close down the School of survey and mapping with immediate effect.
We thank all stakeholder, especially the media for the commitment in pursuing this matter, we need your constant support to prosecute this agenda.
Thank you all may the good lord be with us all in our pursuit of championing the interest of professional students.
SIGNED;
Kele Asraf
(Press And Information Secretary. GUPS)
