So sad we live in a country manipulated by some vicious irresponble media people who have no clue about some many things they fight against and because we have very weak inexperienced people manning the country out of cheap politics there is no direction. There is a complete failure of these three institutions that the useless media are not aware they are the cause of the spread of illegal mining in our country. The media should go and ask the mandate of these bodies if they have not been bribed. The EPA , The mineral commission, The Mining Inspectrate before they jump into their foolishness

And it was still 12 PM - small business you say?. You do the sum for what is being averaged per month!.My point? Most people, even graduates ignore daily income services sector. Yet we sit in our country and cry of poverty. No civilized person likes environmental degradation neither if those bodies who are mandated to enforce laws failed to execute what they are suppose to. This same media should investigate how some large scale mining companies are selling plots of.their lands to Chinese and other people for galamsey. Just at the door step of kingdom there is one Extra Gold company doing such criminal activities all over kwabeng enviros is the media not aware?

Mr. Koney, thanks for ur wise talk. This govt is block headed, Infact, they don't know what they are talking abt. Instead of them to fine tune small scale mining they want to abolish it. That is stupid!! knee-jerk approach and will bring nothing but confusion and create insecurity in the country. They too, the politicians ve failed, just as some of the small scale miners has failed to protect the environment. They should tell us, since 1992 how jobs ve they been able to create in this country? Nothing! For illegal mining I can't speak for them, but for the small scale mining the govt should stay clear, resource EPA to do its job properly. As for the Media and civil society groups, the least said about them the better, they are complete ignorance. They do not even know the difference between illegal or galamsey and small scale mining. They are simply anti-mining. Please stop demonizing small scale mining because we are not going anywhere.

With respect, Opanin, there is nothing small-scale about the environmental destruction and degradation caused by 32-tonne excavators.
The small-scale surface gold mining sector was meant for people using panning methods and simple hand tools to mine gold.
Nowhere in this world will regulators permit the kind of egregious pollution and poisoning of soils, streams, rivers, groundwater and other water bodies, at a time of global warming.
The situation with licensed small-scale miners is thast the vast majority of them are mining in irresponsible fashion environmentally. That is a fact.
They routinely extend the 25-acres allotted them as concessions without permission - with many mining far in excess of the licenced 25-acre limit.
Then there is the criminality of using cadestral Minerals Commission maps of their concessions to cloak their activities in areas they buy land from poor farmers to mine on - using forged documents as 'legal cover' to fool the unwary and the inquisitive.
In any serious country they would all be in jail after being prosecuted by the regulatory bodies for those unpardonable and abominable lapses.
Let us be brutally frank: the unfathomable greed that drives most licensed small-scale gold miners should not be allowed to threaten the future of what is left of our nation's natural heritage. Ever. Period.
Actualky in light of all the apocalyptic degradation and pollution now going on across vast swsthes of the Ghanaian countryside, as a people who bare not fools, we are definitely better off leaving the gold in the ground - especially if a nation perpetually broke because of the many white-collar criminals looting taxpayers' cash in the system - has to import water in the ferry near future so that a few thousand greedy and selfish small-scale gold miners can continue to grow super-rich today at society's expense in the meantime.
Is that equitable to you, I ask?
Make no mistake, in the end we in the media will have accompany regulatory bodies' personnel to inspect all small-scale concessions physically to make sure that all those who have broken any laws are quickly prosecuted and jailed.
And Parliament will have to quickly pass tough new amended laws prescribing mandatory life jail sentences with hard labour without the possibility of parole for all those who break the Mining Act.
We are all not stupid ignoramuses in the Ghanaian media, Massa - and the consciences of some of us are not for sale etc any price so sodden Small's Cale miners can never bribe us.
Go and ask your former president Lamptey of Solar Mining that has reversed into the once-bankrupt Kibi Goldmines who Kofi Thompson is.
My family owns 14-square mikes freehold land in the Atewa Range - and had done since 1915-1921 from the colonial era.
I intend to sue Hagnella Mining and its assigns, including a cousin of mine for compensatuon and prosecuted and jailed for destroying part of our land - and abandoning mined out pits without restoring the land they unlawfully caused such criminal damage on.
I am talking from experience and if dome of us had our way the only gold mining in Ghana would underground main ng. We should halt all surface gold mining: n Ghana. Period.
Final point: the vast majority of the so-called small-scale are in reality clever and ruthless criminals who evade taxes on top of their many crimes against humanity.
May God forgive you for making light of a huge national emergency and crisis that threatens our quality of life and our children's future - and that of their children too.
Hmm, Oman Ghana - eyeasem o. Asem kesie ebeba debi ankasa.

These miners actually just don't get it. Having a license to mine doesn't mean you have the license to destroy the environment. The government should hold these miners responsible for the environmental disasters that their activities are causing to the country. You can mine all you want but be prepared to pay heavily for any environmental damage. There's no contract that guarantees your right to destroy the environment.
