The least said about how exhorbitant the new rates are, it will encourage a lot of wrong doing since it will make monitoring difficult and some commercial vehicle owners may be compelled to delay payment in which case accident as and when they occur passengers will not be covered.
So the mischief that is sort to be arrested will actually be defeated overall.
The authorities should look into the decision more critically before it takes effect. And since it has already taken effect it should be suspended for a moment and a period of about 6 months notice will be appropriate.
Especially, not at a time when flood have just damaged a large percentage of cars in the capital city.
These insurers did not even mention what the will pay or do for flood damaged cars and car owners.
It is like they are saying fix your car yourself and the moment you are back on the roads your insurance will go up.
This attitude by insurers will put a lot of struggling car owners out of business and the ripple effect will mean higher transportation fares.
Already everyone knows the metro transport system have been struggling to leverage the government invested, and the State Transport (STC) has not been doing any better.

Insurance companies in Ghana do not have actuarial departments not to talk of recruiting actuaries. Ask them the method they use to calculate motor premiums and you will be amazed. Honestly, they prefer marketers, chartered insurers, IT professionals etc to actuaries. The regulators are definitely not up to the task. MOST OF THESE COMPANIES CANNOT PRICE, PROFIT TEST, DETERMINE RESERVES ETC WHICH ARE FUNDAMENTAL IN INSURANCE. The explanations given was not supported with facts but speculated as if is a social issue rather than scientific.
