It's about time the truce! Good to have senses. Too much agitation helps no one; not least, the workers themselves.

Mr. Joe Boahen, could you remember that Nkrumah used to incite workers to strike against the Whiteman, but outlawed strikes in his regime and said they were unpatriotic when living conditions were genuinely difficult for workers?
Could you also remember that Rawlings used to incite TUC workers to strike against Liman's government to over throw it fraudulently? And could you remember that he used to take 'Kenkey' to Legon to demonstrate how the size had shrunk under Liman and we ended up in the "Rawlings's Chain" but nobody could talk? Could you further remember that Acheampong and Rawlings used the mild IMF conditions under Busia and Liman respectively as justifications for overthrowing their governments deceitfully? Could you still remember that PNDC reintroduced IMF and the World Bank with more stringent conditions after the coup without apologizing to Liman?
I don't know what the leftists are talking about, and I don't believe that NPP is behind the present wave of strikes either. As far as I know, NPP is only highlighting the failings and excesses of the NDC government, hopping that they would translate into votes for the party in the next elections. And that is, in fact, a genuine and legitimate politics since the failings are true and not false. Everybody in Ghana knows that cost of living under this NDC government is unbearable, and NPP is democratically seizing the opportunity to convince the electorate not to vote for NDC in the next elections.
Frankly, I don't see anything wrong with an opposition highlighting the failings of an incapable government to wrestle power from it democratically. NDC is the cause of the strikes because of the massive corruption, over spending, reckless borrowing and overall economic mismanagement that have brought untold hardship on Ghanaians. Also, NDC cannot frivolously spend $5bn of public money outside the budget in 2012 to buy the conscience of some gullible voters, and yet expect everything to be normal in the subsequent years without any difficulties in the economy.
Moreover, the monies collected from workers have virtually disappeared, and that Thomson guy at SSNIT is not to be trusted because he is a vampire. His brother is the other Thomson that was at STC as its CEO and was removed last year by its workers for pension funds and other wrongdoings. Until the "Big" Thomson at SSNIT is also removed, the extent of the damage done to workers' pensions in this country will never be known. The monies have been misused under Mr. Thomson and SSNIT is bankrupt.
The only lasting solution to this standoff is to send BNI to SSNIT to investigate and unearth the stinking rot kept in their big cupboards. What they will find will send every Ghanaian into the street calling for "blood to flow". Unfortunately, the government itself seems to have a hand in the malfeasance, and that is a potential impediment that workers would have to face.

Is the LSWU coming to the realization that labour will lose the case in court and are now bowing to the arbitration process?
Probably if labour had been that reasonable the problem would have been resolved by now.
