Professors in tertiary institutions must read GES directives. There are many important and useful GES directives which would help them.
GES banned all forms of corporal punishment in Educational institutions but there are reports that some tertiary institutions are still carrying out this practice. Asking students to kneel down and so on.

The GRA must find INNOVATIVE ways to ROPE the 80% of the Informal Sector they are talking about into the Tax NET.
It is a very SIMPLE PROCESS if they know what they are about. This talk by Mr. Bensah tells you that the People in charge are woefully DEFICIENT in Tax Matters and LACK IDEAS in CASTING the TAX NET Wider.
Just read the following again:
"He expressed concern that 8O per cent of businesses and people in the informal sector of the economy were not paying taxes due to lack of historical database to track them and said as a developing country there was the need to identify and develop computerized database to capture the informal sector".
I BEG TO DIFFER with the foregoing. In a country like Ghana where our Economy is IMPORT DRIVEN, and those Imports come through the PORTS, there is already a DATA BASE generated through Port CLEARANCE Processes.
All the GRA needs to do is to FOLLOW the TRAIL from the PORT CLEARANCE Data Base to the DISTRIBUTIVE CHAIN and ultimately to the RETAILER. This is NOT DIFFICULT At ALL. But then, if you DON'T KNOW what you are doing, are not QUALIFIED for it and have NO PASSION for it, then it is no different from Common ILLITERACY; you will see Figures and Letters but they don't MEAN ANYTHING to You because all you see are Figures and Letters.

One day a prostitute in Takoradi went to file her taxes, and for occupation she put prostitution.
The tax collector explained that prostitution was an illegal occupation.
She said she'd have to go home and think about it and that she'd call him back in a hour with her occupation.
An hour later she called him and said, "I've got it... I'm a chicken farmer."
He said, "How do you get chicken farmer out of prostitution."
She said, "I raised over a thousand cocks last year."

It is the responsibility of every citizen wether in the formal or informal sector to pay taxes.however has GRA consider the challenges those in informal sector face before even raising a small capital to start a business. In Ghana any policy or whatever that involves the citizen pay money to the Govt they are always serious about it whereas when it involves the Govt give to the society they refuse.Have you heard those agencies that promote businesses making advert but you hear GRA,ECG,Metropolitan and municipal assemblies collecting money from citizens seriously.Even central Bank policy rate is 21% ,how can businesses survive.

In the Western countries where tax collection is properly organized, citizens know and recognize the benefits in paying taxes.... good healthcare system, good schools, well-designed highways and road systems with some of the best public transportation systems.
I know it would seem like I'm comparing apples and oranges here but the amount or extent of corruption one sees in every facet of the Ghanaian lifestyle, especially in government and with officials in authority makes paying taxes in Ghana something to dread.
Everyone knows where the revenue from taxes will eventually end up.
So until things change and I know our kids will not attend classes under a tree and have cement blocks as tables and chairs, I for one, will refuse paying taxes for as long as I can and if any arm of the government tries to force me to pay, I will challenge them in court.
Look at our roads and highways and bridges.... toll booths have been in existence at strategic points near these bridges since I was a kid. Some of these bridges are just hanging by 'threads' yet they keep collecting money and nothing is done to maintain these bridges.
* Our healthcare system is nothing to write home about.
* Our streets are littered with filth and garbage causing and spreading diseases like wildfire.
* No good treated drinking water.
* "Dumsor" has become an accepted norm in the Ghanaian psyche.
So can somebody 'educate' me on what the tax money is being used for, please? ... and I'm not asking anyone to tell me the benefits of paying taxes because I'm very familiar with that aspect of the equation. I live in a Western country and I see the benefits of taxes around me everyday.
I just don't want to pay a pesewa in tax to the corrupt Ghana government knowing very well it's not going to end up where it's supposed to.
