These reactors are extremely expensive to build. While the returns may be very great, they're also very slow. It can sometimes take decades to recoup initial costs. Since many investors have a short attention span, they don't like to wait that long for their investment to pay off.I hope politicians will forgo their 10% on this one.Gas fired and Biomas plants will more economical and faster.

You need vast tracts of land for solar to generate 700MG.That said a 250MG solar plant powering about 280 thousand homes will cost about $1.5 billion.Multiply that by three.Life span of nuclear is 40-50 years.Solar 25 years.

I don`t know how you came by $1.5billion for 280 thousand homes but assuming you are right,unlike other energy generating technologies, there is no running not even waste disposing cost for solar and wind. An expert looking for an a solution to Ghana`sacute energy problem is expected to have first compared the available techonologies at lest on paper based on development and implementation time, cost, risk, running cost, raw materials etc.

You can compare a solar generator for an Australian farm to Solar generator for towns and cities in Ghana in terms of cost. The cost of transporting the generate energy to the farms is great and therefore more generators spreaded over a wider area may be preferable moreover the needed energy needed in the farms are not as high as in towns and city. Australia may be manufacturing the panels and generators and therefore see it as an investment worth its cost interms of job creation and acquiring technological knowhow for the exportation of solar products in the future.

Do Ghanaian experts think outside the box by considering all factors before taking a decision with long term and fatal consequences? What type of experts and leaders at all do Ghana has in its energy sector that will not consider, cost, risk, waste management, availability of raw materials, stand of the technology before deciding on the appropriate energy technology for the country. When Countries like Germany with long standing knowledge in the construction and managing of nuclear energy technology and with less than half the anual sunshine of Ghana are moving away from nuclear energy to solar and wind despite the countries extremely high energy demand because of the risk and the cost of managing the nuclear waste and accident. Till today Germany has not got a place suitable for the permanent storage of her nuclear waste. Ghanaian Experts and leaders are deciding to go in for nuclear without including nuclear waste management and nulear accident management in their feasibility studies even though the results of the nuclear accident in Japan is still making headline in the international news media. Quoted:"The approval of the country's nuclear energy programme and the subsequent establishment of the NEPIO means that the stage has been set for officials from the GAEC and the MoEP to commence feasibility studies into the establishment of a nuclear reactor and plant, which will convert energy released from the nucleus of an atom through nuclear fissions into nuclear power." May God help and save Ghana and her future citizenry.

Sure there are risk in life but every level headed man or woman tries to reduce risk to the bearest minimum and Ghana with its numerous problems should not be pushed by ignorant or selfish individuals to going for more risky and costly techonologies at the expense of the majority who may need the extra money for educational, health,water, housing, jobs roads etc without any proper analysis.

However, Govt should pay a serious attention to deforestation and its consequent desertification, water scarcity and all the adverse impact one can imagine. very soon the Akosombo Dam and other dam projects in Ghana will be left for the wind and perhaps a safe haven for drug dealers to hide if no serious policies measure are taken to arrest deforestation.

What makes our policy advisers think that we can do any better than the nuclear powers?

Let us concentrate on what we currently have and manage it well. This is primarily hydro, thermal and solar. We should also develop biomass energy - the Accra project should be revived.

Let us learn to walk before we start to run.

Let me confess my ignorance abt energy issues first. Nonetheless this is one of the few times i've enjoyed this forum - proper national debate on energy.
Having read all arguments, i think the nay hv it. From lazy, careless Ghanaian workers and corrupt officials to cost of maintenance and enormous risk to society, it just doesn't make sense for us to go nuclear. We're not ready.We shouldn't be fanciful. Solar is a better option. Can be produced on our roof tops.
I'v also observed that ur intellectual debate has subdued the ignorant political comments. Kudos!!
