Charcoal is that obtained from incomplete burning of wood. It is therefore renewable. It is commonly produced in Ghana.

As both you and I know, we don't have the best health care system in the world, so how do you propose to deal with the inherent breathing problems future generations are going to suffer in and around where such plants would be built?
I've worked in a lot of power plants in North America and I can tell you that coal-fired plants are the worst polluters of the environment. Even the most advanced nations are trying to stay away from coal-fired plants these days.
Why do we want to compound our problems even more if we can't even handle the medicals issues associated with malaria? We only have taxis masquerading as ambulances in our cities. A lot of our children and grand children would be the worst sufferers of asthma and other unknown breathing problems if these plants are allowed to be built.
Just check my suggestion about wind-powered turbines for power generation on this page and tell me what you think, would you?
They are a whole lot cleaner and cheaper, not to mention that Ghana is lucky to have a whole coastal stretch along the Gulf of Guinea.

Now here we are with our dumb shit Energy ministry thinking about a coal-fored power plant. China doesn't care a hoot about the world environment. Even more so if it's not directly in their backyard. Do you know the number of generations that will suffer from breathing problems that will be associated with this coal-fired plant? It's not like Ghana has the best health care program in the world so just because we are desperate for power doesn't mean we should create more problems for our citizenry in terms of our health. There's no one good working hospital in the country that we can lay claim to so what is the sense in compounding the situation?
Is CHINA prepared to build well-maintained hospitals in the towns immediately around this coal-fired plant location? Like I said China doesn't care a rat's ass what happens to the inhabitants around this plant. Look at the way they are messing up our rivers, our farms and our landscapes with their illegal mining activities. These rogues don't give a hoot to what happens to us as long as they get their profits. If our leaders are fools enough to believe whatever these crooks tell them, they should only go back to look at how China is pulling the puppetry strings in terms of the loans they have given us so far. We are paying "out of this world" exorbitant interest rates on them.
So why anyone with a functioning brain in their heads will listen to the Chinese is beyond my comprehension.
Infact, this confirms my belief that we have blockheads for people put in very responsible positions in Ghana.
The amount of money we we spend to get this plant running can be used for feasibilty studies to determine and if possible, install wind-powered
generators all along our coasts. We won't need fuel to fire them; all we need is the abundance of wind we have along our coastal lines.
Coal, on the other hand will have to be imported and we will be at the mercy of the exporters of coal. We don't have a good record as a nation for paying up what we get from other nations and even if we are able to, they are going to charge us an arm and a leg for their products and services. WEalways end up paying through the nose.
So forget about coal and concentrate on WIND-POWERED turbines onour coast.
ONLY GOD CAN SAVE US with these fools we have as leaders!!!!!

Mr minister can heave a sigh of relief, pat himself on the back, take a vacation and rest peacefully for the next few days for he's got the air off his chest .
The fierce urgency of now does not call for any knee jerk solutions. Now is the time to prove he's the best qualified for his job. While it's true that a country like the USA is dependent on coal sources for some of their energy needs, there's a raging fierce debate on the health and environmental hazards the pollution from the coal industry is causing the nation. We will not be able to manage the pollution from the coal industry so why even talk about it.

What about the gas infrastructure project which should have come onstream like ages ago, to power the thermal component of our generation capacity? What is holding it up? What about solar energy? What incentives would it take to go into large scale solar energy generation? How can we streamline this process of solar energy generation such that, real estate developers can incorporate it into their developments and what incentives would go with it such that it would take some of the pressure of our traditional sources of energy generation so industry can benefit from this arrangement?
What about biomass energy? What about wind energy?
There are very realistic, environmentally sound sources of energy generation which makes far more sense than coal fired plants, or any argument for clean coal energy. The importation of the raw material is a disincentive in the first place, making it highly unattractive.
The time for coal energy per John Jinapor, if he cares to know, passed a few centuries ago, and the Mahama led NDC gov't should get with the times. If they cannot fix the energy crisis, which is the case judging from their rather very long tenure in office since the 1980's, they should resign immediately, for a team that has demonstrated the ability to get things done, get in there and do the job.
