Most of the mining companies are currently losing $ due to the low gold price and the excessive taxes & fees in Ghana. Why do you think Obuasi is closing? They are losing $30million a month! Sure, the miners have to pay their share, and more. However it has to be sustainable or they will all leave and Ghana will lose huge income from taxes, royalties, payroll, supliers, service providers etc.
Ghana has become the least attractive country for mining in West Africa, except for the galamsey who don't pay shit to the government or local communities.
Sure the Ghana Govt or Pvt Ghana investors can take over all of the big mines, but they have demonstrated thoroughly back in the days of state mining companies that they cant mine worth shit and just siphoned off all of the cash through corruption. Not the better option I don't think...
And this rent fee is not small - do the math for the annual rent on a 100 km2 mining lease.

Yes, at this new rate, 100 km sq. will fetch ONLY $901,550.00 compared with the billions taken.

And again, a few of the miners are NOT taking home ANY profits currently; nada, zilch, zero. While the government still gets their 5% royalty and 35% corporate tax and much, much more. Better you ask the government where the fuck all that money is going...? Doh...!

Bauxite (from the Western Region) --- 333,458 mt
Manganese (from the Western Region) --- 596,572 mt
(Source mining policy of Ghana)
Value today:
Gold --- $1400 per oz
Diamond --- from $1500 to $150,000 per carat (Market price)
Bauxite --- $150 per mt
Manganese --- $450 per tonne
Akyem districts make up more than half of the population of the Eastern Region.
Even though today diamond production from Akyem has stopped temporarily Akyem districts must be given their fair share of projects. Discrimination against Akyems districts has been going on for at least the last forty years. A visit to the Akyem districts would indicate the poor state of districts: bad roads, poor infrastructure. The state of the districts is not reflective of the revenue they have contributed over the last 100 years.
