Considering the investment we have made in education since independence Ghana should have been far advanced by now. It is high time we switched to effective and quality education. We cannot invest so many man hours and money on students only for them to score zero in BECE or SSCE. However we must not forget that if our educational system is good but our economy is bad we would just be exporting labor. A good economy is necessary for a good educational system and a good educational system is necessary for a good economy. Our educational system must be purpose oriented.

It is not too late to incorporate welder training in our school's curriculum. Secondary and tertiary institutions can obtain accredition from the American Welding Society AWS (Ghana is yet to identify a body that will regulate the operation of the welding industry) to run the SENSE program which sets standards for the qualification and certification of ENTRY,ADVANCED and EXPERT welders. WTTC-Takoradi is using the SENSE program in training ENTRY and ADVANCED welders NOW.

Please be informed that Tertiary institutions run courses leading to Certified Welding Engineers, Inspectors, Level III NDT inspectors in RT,UT,PT,MT etc in other jurisdictions which certifications are required to fulfil the QA/QC requirements of the welding industry. Log on to South African Institute of Welding(SAIW)and you will appreciate what our tertiary institutions can do to support our welding industry. What is the point in obtaining all the degrees from our tertiary institutions but CANNOT pass a qualification test to enable you work in industry? There are a lot of employment opportunities in the welding industry for graduates. With a change in skills, habits, attitude and knowledge Ghana will be able to harness this potential in the welding industry.

Lack of Quality Standards and its enforcement in Ghana and the ECOWAS Sub Region covers almost all products from Primary (Raw- materials like minerals, sand, wood etc, farm products food, vegetables, fruits, herbs, animals, meat, fish etc),through the Secondary products (manufactured and Semi- manufactured goods) to Tertiary products (Services) sold at our market. If the signing of the EPA between the EU and the ECOWAS by our Leaders were to be of any good to Ghana and eventually to the Sub Region, then the Government of Ghana must make sure that the Ghana Standard Board immediately accessed the current EU quality standards on all products. The Board must be funded to 1.) work on them with reference to other major Standards like North American, Japanese and Chinese standards to improve the EU standards to suit us especially, in areas where there are major climatic, vegetational and structural differences between the EU Region and the ECOWAS Region. 2) build testing facilities and train testing personnel. The improved or worked on EU Standards must be adopted as Ghana Standards which is to used as the bases for the ECOWAS standards later. These Standards must be published and distributed to all Stakeholders especially, Local Manufacturers, importers, Retailers as well as the Regional Ministry, Municipal and District assemblies who together with the Ghana Standard Board are to see to its implementation and enforcement. All imported products on our markets must meet our Standards 6 months after publication and made in Ghana 18months after publication. National, Regional, Municipal and District Patent Offices must be established with trained patent personnel especially patent lawyers and clerks. We must know that our products can be sold in the EU and other markets if and only if they meet their minimum quality standards. The early we make our manufactures fit or competitive quality wise the better.

A welding contractor MUST obtain the following documents to be able to work on contacts that conform to international welding standards: WPS,PQR,and WPQR whether a foreign or local company. That is why we must START a program of assisting our local companies to meet these standards NOW-I MEAN TODAY!. The more we delay, the more foreign welders will perform our welding for us and take the JUICY wages away. TRAIN,QUALIFY,GET CERTIFIED to any of the international codes/standards and work as a proud welder.

Mr.Kwarkyi, stop misleading Ghanaians and its technical institutions. As welder, certified or not you only weld what is on the drawing or what you are told by your supervisor or the engineer. It is the designing engineer who through the standards calculate the minimum required strength of the welding joint. Based on the material to be used, decides on the type of welding process to be used, the breath and depth of the welding and communicates it through technical drawing to the welder. The communication with the welder can be done verbally when the welder cannot read technical drawing and the welding symbols. Mr. Kwarkyi please stop being one eyed man in the country of the blind to take us for a ride.

Its refreshing to know that a welder must demonstrate his qualification through testing according to standards such as AWS,ASME,API,ABS,BSEN etc. A qualified Welding Inspector should witness such welding and perform nondestructive and/or destructive test and issue a Welder Performance Qualification Record (WPQR). A typical qualification is the ASME IX,6G using SMAW on ASTM A106 GrB SCH80 6inch pipe. If you can pass this test then you are ready to weld in the O&G industry.

Mr. Kwarkyi stop imposing your Welding Qualification system on Ghana for they are internationally not standardized. Germans, Americans, Japanese, Russians etc have their own system of Grading their welders. What every industrial company including Oil and Gas need to show its costumers is ISO 9001 :2000 certification. It is what you are and what qualification you hold. Don`t forget most companies are using CNC(computer numeric control)machines including welding and are moving even a step further to digitalize their production systems to improve quality and reduce labour cost. Ghana and the ECOWAS Region have abundant cheap labour who need the right type of training and not paper qualification to help the regions industries to be competitive. Please do not hijack the Regions development for your personality.

Mr Boamah Gyamerah, I can understand your frustration with the system of qualification in the country. As a welding Inspector it is my duty and obligation to help Ghanaians to understand the requirements of the industry. ISO 9001 is the more reason a company's work must meet international standards. If you have been welding, I offer you the opportunity to test your skills at our 24 booth welder testing center in Takoradi free of charge. I offer you a test using SMAW on plate or pipe for unlimited thickness in ASME IX 6G, or AWS D1.1 or European equivalent BSEN (NOT KWARKYI'S STANDARDS) . I assure you advanced welder job in the O&G industry after successful qualification. All the best.

The most important tool for growing industries which lack the financial power, costumer base and experience is the Quality management system they employ and not the paper qualification of their workforce.

Mr Boamah Gyamera, I am a bit shocked about your background and not following this discussion on welder qualification. Upgrade your information on Industrial Welding now! Consult another professional engineer or welding inspector for updates in the industry. I have written WPS, PQR and performed Welder qualifictions through witnessing and documentation for Oil& Gas, mining, shipbuilding and repairs industry. We also operate a weld engineering lab in Takoradi patronised by international companies. So these requirements are NOT mine. They are international
For your information, ISO 9001 requires manufacturers to follow an audited QA/QC program. In welding this requires that all welders are qualified to the applicable codes. Check pre-qualification for CWI or CSWIP. It is not too late for you to access any of these qualifications. Ironically I have been a practicing Mechanical engineer in rubber, glass manufacturing and minig for over 20 years before attending a welding school in Troy, Ohio, US. I have been consulting in Welding since 2011 as a CWI, CWE and NDT technician. This is the requirement for the welding industry today and I am trying to assist Ghanaians to access these qualifications in Ghana. You are welcome. danestweldgh@gmail.com

I am not sure your company is in to fabrication or manufacturing where you have to deal with Inspectors from ABS, DNV, LB etc. Please be informed that what you have written as processes are not: SMAW,GTAW,GMAW,FCAW,SAW, PAC etc are! Most of the policy makers in the country think like you and for 3 years now into our O&G find our peolple have not been able to secure the juicy contracts in welding because of qualification. These positions are occupied by expatriates who have spent many years in training and qualification. Reasoning that welder qualification is not necessary for the Ghanaian welder is a major setback for decision making. Speak to any welder and you will know that none will agree with you. My goal is to help establish Ghana Welding Society to educate Professional engineers like you to appreciate the demands of the welding industry and serve as a connect between industry and academia. Look out for and attend one of the technical training seminars for personnel in the welding industry.

I intentionally gave you the abbreviation of selected but general welding processes in German to drive home to that even the abbreviations of the welding processes are not internationally standardized. You have confirmed it. The German E1- E6 (Elektroden Schweißen) in English unshielded consumable electrode welding eg. Flux Cored Arc Welding FCAW quoted by you, German WIG (Wolfram Inert Gas Schweißen) English Continuous consumable electrode and shielding gas ie Gas Metal arc welding GMAW as stated by you. German MAG (Metall Aktiv Gas Schweißen) English Consumable electrode covered in flux, can weld any metal as long as they have the right electrode ie Shielded metal arc welding SMAW etc. PAC quoted by you (Plasma Arc Cutting in German Plasma Schneiden is a cutting process and not a welding process. The welding process is called PAW Plasma arc welding so Mr. Kwarkyi stop playing on your on intelligence to exploit the situation in Ghana. Remember the ball will bounce back to you one day.

Be more professional and recognize your limitations. If you are totally ignorant about welding inspection trends, qa/qc, please join the professionals by striving to be certified - BGAS, CSWIP3.2, CWI/E Level3 NDT personnel etc then you can contribute professionally devoid of sensationalism. Welder Training and Testing Center in Takoradi has trained and is still training welders to qualify in AWS D1.1 3G&4G, ASME IX 6G positions on both plate and pipe in preparation for ABS,DNV and other tests.
These are the requirements of industry NOT KWARKYIS INTELLIGENCE. WTTC-Takoradi has rolled out the "GHANA 100 QUALIFIED WELDER PROJECT" seeking to train, qualify and certify at least 100 welders and place same on a national website accesssible to prospective employers this year. Your support and input especially with welding consumables and sposorship are welcome at our 24 booth world-class training center. Our goal is to make 1,000 proud Ghanaian welders in all processes within 5 years. You are welcome.
