For the life of Ghanaians, the people of this country and mother Ghana, lets stop once and for all, lets put an emphatic and final stop to this business of handing over the infrastructural landmarks of the economy to foreign companies and nationals. It doesn't make sense to build these companies to develop and bolster our economy and then turn around to hand them over to foreigners to look after for us. If we hand them over to others, do we expect them to run them to our benefit? Of course not, it would be run to their benefit, which defeats the purpose of their construction. I think it is time to set up a machinery of state to oversee and supervise the collective infrastructure built in the country. They should make sure these are not run down to be sold off to some foreign investor in the not too distant future. What is this sense of mediocrity that allows us to sell off our national assets at the drop of a pin.

Handing over the Tema Shipyard is sad and a shame, because if it is left in the hands of the government or any ghanaian institution it will break down entirely, like what has happened to many a ghanaian factory. I don't subscribe to the idea of selling off all our national assets, but the true fact is, we ghanaians don't know management. And I can assure you that despite all the noises that were made if GT were not sold to Vodafone it would have broken down by now. Only if Tema Shipyard is to be sold it must go to very responsible buyers, who can develop it further.Talking about capital flight, yes they will take some of their profits out of the country, however they have to invest in the factory in order to make it viable. And also they will employ ghanaians there creating jobs. As it now seems sooner or later the Shipyard will go bankrupt and Ghanaians will lose everything. Think about that!

Our current governments after Dr. Nkrumah know only to sell but not to build new ones. Study the capitalist democracies carefully. There are assets they never sold to private companies. Our governments sell because they will always get a cut. It is not for nothing if you hear them advocating selling of Nkrumah's projects. Build more and put people to work not selling. Will Tullow bring new people to manage or use our own people and ship the hard currencies somewhere else. TUC is right!!!

In the past, who used to run the Tema shipyard? What kind of profit did they make?
Remember the State Fishing corporation. This corporation used to be run by AKERS management Team from Norway. Under their management State fishing corporation was very prosperous. Staff were paid on time. Ships sail in and out on time with plenty fish for the Ghanaian market. There was a lot of disciple among the officers and crew. Every one worked diligently under Akers.
For an unknown reason a law was passed that the State fishing Corporation should be handed over to Ghanaian management. As soon as that happened, every thing fell apart. Ship delayed in port for days for lack of fuel and food supplies.Unqualified Ghanaians were hired and placed in position that they did not know anything about. The new crew hired refused to take orders from their Ghanaian Officers on board the ship, simply because they know or are related to somebody in power. The crew on board the ships started to steal and sell their catch (fish) on high seas to make ends meet. Ships return to port with less fish than expected. Things fell apart with State Fishing Corporation. Today all the ships. namely M.V Shama, M.V Aboabo, M.v Nyamaw, M.V Checheku and the rest are no more. For some unknown reason Ghanaians do not care and we are our own west enemies. We sit down and complain and talk big but when it comes to do the right thing we run and hide. Where was TUC when the fishing corporation was falling apart. Mismanagement among Ghanaian is our problem. Let Tallow Oil take over the shipyard, I bet you within one year they will make profit. Long live Ghana.Together, with disciple attached to it, we will make progress.May God bless our Mother land.

It seems rather strange to handover the running and management of a state owned Ship Yard to an oil prospecting company. Although Tema Ship Yard strikes me as having been a poorly managed marine industry in the past but surely that does not mean an oil drilling company is the one next to revive the yard's fortunes. Does anybody in the Ghana Government at all know what to do when it comes to Ship Yard administration and management, why not call in the experts for advice?

Tullow corporation is very experience in the the marine industry. They will bring in foreign ships to be repaired at the dry dock. At the same time they will have access to the docks to repair their own ships. This means more Ghanaians will be hired. As such more taxes will be collected by the Government. The government do not have time an expertise to run a dry dock. Please let private companies run all this failing state owned corporations.
It will take a corporation like Tallow with world wide expertise to run the dry dock. We lost State fishing corporation. We lost Black Star line shipping company. We lost Ghana Airways. All because of mismanagement by Ghanaians. We need to wake up and let the private investors take over the State run corporations.

The modern Ghanaian, is far away from managing affairs for the Government. Let private companies run business in Ghana. The Government should only collect taxes and set rules for those companies.

Ghanaians seem to perform well in private entreprises whether locally or foreign owned. But in this case I do not see any local entreprise with the financial and technical expertise that can turn the shipyard around. GHAPOHA is govt-owned; and has enough problems with delayed ship turn arounds. Let's stop this sentimental argumentation against foreign investment and rather think about how to best negotiate the deals. If Tullow is to handover a revamped facility to us in 3 years what is our fear?
