I wish there will be more transparency in this deal but I forsaw the abrogation coming. I told some of my Merchant Bank friends that this deal will not go through since government is an interested party. In Ghana all kinds of people in politics will like to make millions in a transaction which should be handled purely on commercial ground. This is what have been happening in this country for sometime now.
I am of the strongest view that politics is the bane of this country. The introduction of multi party into this country has rather slowed down the progress of Ghana. Those who hail multi party governence are looking at this system from the narrow perspective. The west could practice it well based on the systems put into place and the level of enlightenment in those enviroment. These things are absent in Africa and the elite will never consciously allow these to operate here. It is very easy for a few of the people to control the masses without the masses knowing what is happening because of illiteracy.
What is happening to Merchant Bank will also happen to any entity which is public. But there is a private bank owned by Malaysians which is also off-loading to a Nigerian bank currently. I have no doubt the story would have been the same if this Malaysian bank was a public bank. It is the expectation of stakeholders this transaction will be quickily finalised to bring the benefits all the parties look up to.

I have written here before and I write again that all institutions with political influence in Ghana cannot operate rationally and I therefore I support the sale. Merchant Bank is suffering and if it goes down, I can predict that before the term of this government ADB or NIB will follow suit. Infact it is said that this same Ibrahim Mahama has taken a loan amounting to 25% of the net worth of ADB. By the Merchant example, he will not pay but interestingly I hear he pays loans taken from UT bank. Why? UT is not government owned. If truly the misunderstanding for the deal falling through is that of the bad debt, then my suspicion is that someone is trying to protect a debtor so as not not pay outstanding debts. May God punish the enemies of Ghana and these selfish people. May their children not be responsible to inherit their ill gotten wealth. Kofi Wayo once said that Asia have their Tsunami, America have their Hurricane but in Ghana the natural disaster is the Politician. Kofi, for once I agree with you.
