Although this article was written by a pro-telecom advocate, it makes a lot of sense. The government is in desperate need of cash. They don't want to do the difficult thing like cut down on government spending (i.e. salaries)or tax the informal sector so they try to increase revenue by increasing taxes on those who are already taxed. People will spend a little bit less on making calls, the telecom operator will be paying more in tax and less profits, thus will have to cut back on either investment or other expenditures in the local economy, thus having a knock-on affect in the Ghanain economy. It's inevitable.

You are becoming very boring. All your comments are to blame Ashanti, Akan, Akyim and Ga. Why? Don't you know that the northerners are more closely related to the Ghana CLAN more that anyone else? If you were to look at the real Ghana picture, the odd balls are the Ewe! And even though they are nice people but your separatist views are causing concern. Can you not see that we are all Ghanaians? and that there is a mix of every tribe within the minority and majority? The name of the game here is accountability, professionalism, creativity and moving Ghana forward. Obviously you don't understand that.

We've had 4 presidents during that period: Rawlings, Kuffuor, Mills and Mahama. Kuffuor served for eight years. For the remaining 26 years, non Asantes/Akims ruled the nation. So on what basis are you making your statement? I'd be interested to know.

I urge every Ghanaina to resist these actions of government to impose such hardships on us due to their inefficiencies. They should find smart ways of improving revenue which they seem to identify ways of doing so in their manifestos. The best way is to widen the tax bracket as every singlr economist is calling for.

Ghana's tax system is underdeveloped, its hard for the government to catch Ghanian's to pay their tax, all over the world, companies are used to collect tax for governments the best example is VAT, 100% collected by companies. Advantages of tax trough telco's is that almost every Ghanaian pays, on top of that call cost in Ghana are really low compared to the rest of the world. I have to call Europe regularly, and years ago I asked my counterpart to call me because the cost were high, today its much cheaper to call from here abroad.
