While it true that governments in advanced countries fund their research institutes, they also expect a return on investment (ROI). What Dr. Salifu can do is to assemble experts to carry out a comprehensive program overhaul to include people that can properly position the value and benefits of results from research done at the institute. Dr. Salifu can then go to parliament and testify why they should receive funding. There are several Ghanaians doing just that for these advanced countries. I hope Dr. Salifu will consider this suggestion if he has not already started in this direction. I am sure there are many compatriots in the diaspora that can lend a hand.

Again it shows that our leaders are completely cut off from the comprehension of development. How can we develop if our attitude towards research is so appalling? How does the government expect this body to survive without state funding? As a nation our leaders prefer to keep the failed guinea fowl project at the expense of our national research centre, shame on us!!!

Yaw, the Head of CSIR says when urged to engage Marketers, they got 'scientists'. For all the decades, what benefit do these scientist deliver for their pay and position? They can step into the Guinea Fowl project and make the difference we seek. Mindpower must be transformed into benefits.
These experts closet themselves and work more on research projects that serve their self interest. In any case since scientists think and come up with solutions, let our own come up with a way forward. Crying 'suicide' is no way to prove being a scientist!

What informed such a decision?!!! This directive shows how misguided we're as a nation. Go to advanced nations and see the amount of money they pump into research. God save our nation.

It is true that the most advanced countries have their research sectors heavily funded by the government. And that is alright. This option to get the CSIR "weaned off the public purse", I reckon, is a higher place to function. Certainly more challenging, but higher. Imagine the prospects of a CSIR thriving independent of government funding. It does seem outrageous that the CSIR will be giving such a "squeeze", and in short notice too; 3 months for a plan, knowing it has never had to deal with such a situation. I think Dr. Salifu should rise up to the challenge, make necessary structural adjustments and work something out. Why do we have to use other economies as a measure for possibility or wisdom.

Dr Abdullai B. Salifu, how can you establish a commercial department and not staff it with qualified marketers?
CSIR and our tertiary education institutions can do a lot more to raise funding for their research work.
Just ensure that there is a demand for spin-offs from your research. Solve the problems of our society, and funding will flow in abundance.
When I was at UST, the experimental cattle ranch would sell fresh milk and yoghurt on campus every week.
There was a Technology Consultancy Centre which produced and sold the 'Tech block' made from clay.
There are many more products and consultancy services that CSIR can provide to the public. CSIR can work in partnership with industry and business.
