"I'm very sorry boss," he says, "everything went wrong this morning, my wife decided to drive me to the station. She got ready in ten minutes but we got stuck in traffic. I didn't want to let you down so I got out of the car, knocked a policeman off his motor bike, stole his bike and raced through the streets to the station with siren screaching, the train was just pulling out of the platform so I ran after it and jumped on the back, I clung on at speeds of 100mph for 30 minutes but it didn't stop in the station so I jumped off on the viaduct into the swollen river and swam through raging torrents, got out of the river and grabbed a passing fire engine, clung on for dear life and it dropped me off here - and here I am - look, my suit's still damp!"
"You'll have to do better than that, Smith," said the boss, disappointed. "That's unbelievable, no woman can get ready in ten minutes!"

I can understand where the MP is coming from. It is true we need to invest money in the railway sector. If we agree private sector should be the engine of growth then they must be encouraged to invest in that sector. But which investor will want to inherit a business with such huge and inefficient workforce? The books must be cleaned for the new investor to come in and re-structure the company. Does the MP know there are still railway workers in almost all the stations still drawing the pay-check and not doing any work?

Mills & Mahama borrowed money to revive the railway sector. On january24/2011 Ghanaweb publish on Ghana hooks $1.4billion for railway construction from Tema to Accra and through Koforidua to Kumasi by African Rail Ghana Limited Of Norway and May 22/2012 on Ghanaweb publish Government sources $990million Eastern rail porject.Government also secure $3billion Chinese loan for part to rehabilite Western rails to Kumasi. So why is Government still has to invest different money in railway whiles over $2billion has already invest in railway sector. We need Mahama to come and explian to Ghanaians as to why over $2billion loans receive meant to revive the railway sector and nothing has been done. All the opposition members in parliament to hold NDC accountable any money they borrow they also payed through taxes so they should hold them responsible for their actions.

The strike-happy Rail workers are now feeling the pinch, but it is their own making. A lot of investments were made in the Railways during Nkrumah's government, which had then made the Railways the centre piece of its economic development programme, but was let down by damaging strikes by the Railway Workers' Union with the corroboration of the then opposition Party, the United Party (UP) - the forerunners of NPP. It was not a surprise, therefore, that the government which took charge after Nkrumah's was overthrown ran the railways down and introduced a road transport policy to cart the heavy goods to and from Takoradi from the north of the country. That episode in Nkrumah's time has made successive governments jittery to invest in the sector important, though it is! Unless the government is sure that the Union will not have constant battle with it, I am afraid, the underfunding of the railways will continue unabated!

Ghana is the only country Iknow owning such a terrible railway system and is still hooking to it .Let them sell it to a private Ent. And let us see how long it would take to keep the so called workers and their unions.
