Why only 700MW? We need much more. We should have long term outlook and plan to increase capacity to 10,000MW in five years.

"if the tariff is not right, investors won’t invest,” the VRA boss said. He is preparing the ground and indirectly asking Ghanaians to pay more for electricity. The mismanagement that hit all state owned companies, it is the same mismanagement that is hunting VRA, the water company and the STC. The main problem of these companies is corruption. The present tariffs are damn too high and should have been able to run the various companies with profits to expand. Remove the corrupt practices and the companies will be fine without tariff increment.

It looks as if local generation of power for consumption in rural areas doesn't cross their minds. A lot of places outside Accra have lots of wind which can generate more than enough electricity for those areas. Replicate it across the country and we wont need these behemoths of generating plants all situated in one place and needing fuel to be purchased at high and ever increasing variable costs with the electricity having to be transported across thousands of miles of open spaces to wherever they may be needed.
We don't need all those miles of cable crossing forests and rivers. Those miles of cables cost money. The pylons cost money, maintenance costs money, security costs money, cable thefts by ECG operatives, officials, their agents and scrap dealers costs money, illegal tapping of electricity is also difficult to deal with when the source of power is remote and abstract where local conditions and needs are concerned.
THEY ARE EITHER SIMPLY REFUSING TO THINK AT THE VRA or IMPLEMENTING BETTER SOLUTIONS THAN THEY ARE CURRENTLY, ISN'T IN THEIR PERSONAL PAROCHIAL INTERESTS WHATSOEVER.

What Ghana needs is a clearly defined regulatory framework to ensure that even a household that installs, say solar power, in their home can sell the execess to the national grid. If that system is put in place and safeguarded, VRA will no have to go out to seek millions of dollars that will worsen our debt situation.
As a matter of fact, a private investor can easily single handedly install a solar farm for power generation in less than 6 months, operate and sell this to the national grid, without the process costing the government a cent. And multiple moves in this direction will provide the 700 MW you claim will take 3-4 years to see the light of day. Worst, a move as planned by VRA will be debt for Ghana. Give private hands the opportunity stop indebting the nation.
I'm aware that some deregulation and facilities are in place to enable private operations in the sector. Investment in Ghana is already filled with so much benefits for the foreign investor that we need not more benefits. What is needed is that nationals and non-exporters must also benefit from such tax benefits and holidays so that they can compete with the foreign investor, at least in the energy sector. If this is done, we may not need to seek foreign investors for some of our basic needs as a nation.
By the way, Mr. Awortwi, what rate does government pay VRA per unit of electricity produced? Can anyone tell me?

GHANA'S LAZY LEADERS SHOULD TRAVEL TO THE EX-DESERT COUNTRY LIKE THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (U.A.E) AND LEARN WHAT IT TAKES TO LEAD A COUNTRY BY EXAMPLE.
THE HARDWORKING ROYAL FAMILY IN THE UAE HAS TOTALLY TRANSFORMED A COMPLETELY DESERT WASTELAND INTO A METROPOLITAN MASTERPIECE UNMATCHED BY EVEN THE SO-CALLED WESTERN COUNTRIES.
THOSE WHO KNEW THAT COUNTRY (UAE) 50 YEARS AGO WILL ATTEST TO THIS MASSIVE MATCHLESS TRANSFORMATION ENJOYED BY ALL FOR THE GOOD OF ALL.
MEANWHILE, GHANA IS STILL GRAPPLING EVEN WITH BASIC UNINTERRUPTED SUPPLY OF POTABLE WATER AND ELECTRICITY IN THIS 21ST CENTURY.
GHANA, A COUNTRY WHICH STARTED EXPORTING COUNTLESS NATURAL RESOURCES OVERSEAS MORE THAN 50 YEARS AGO WHEN THE UAE WAS A DESERT WASTELAND WITH NOMADIC PEOPLE ON CAMELS, IS STILL STRUGGLING WITH BUDGET DEFICITS WHILE THE UAE AND OTHER GULF STATES CONTINUE TO ENJOY UNPRECEDENTED GROWTH AND BUDGET SURPLUSES SINCE THEY STARTED EXPORTING CRUDE OIL AND NATURAL GAS LESS THAN 25 YEARS AGO.
INDEED, THE BLACK RACE IS A CURSED RACE. THIS SHOWS THAT BLACKS ARE NOT CAPABLE OF MANAGING ANYTHING WELL, AND POST-APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA PERFECTLY EXEMPLIFIES BLACKS BACKWARDNESS.
NO WONDER BARACK OBAMA HAS CHOSEN TO HAVE MORE WHITES THAN BLACKS IN HIS CABINET AND GOVERNMENT ALTHOUGH OBAMA IS RIDING HIGH IN THE USA BECAUSE OF THE BLACK VOTE.
NO WONDER KEVIN PRINCE BOATENG AND THE LIKE NO LONGER WANTS TO IDENTIFY WITH THE BLACK STAR JERSEY WHEN HE GOT WHAT HE WANTED.

Foresight, Management and Mobilisation is what's required and all Sub-Saharan people & nations are deficient in it. Power without responsibilty. That's how Ashanti gold fields created by British over 150 years ago was lost in a generation. Useless people

Why is this guy not still fired including the Minister for Energy and the one for Water Works or whatever? In Ghana failure is rewarded by not taking responsibility. I am not a Phd holder, but my little Project Management i did tells me that when sourcing out suppliers, you long into the long term for a reliable supplier. Nigeria is not a stable country moreover a reliable supplier for natural gas for the thermal plants that complements Akosombo. The high cost incurred in sourcing say a reliable supplier (Gabon or Algeria)of natural gas so that everyone has constant supply of power far underweighs the cost of an unrelaible supplier. We spend more in the long run depending on an unreliable supplier becuase factories stop producing (vat receipts reduced, workers tax contributions reduce, workers don't spend in the economy etc)than spend more in the short run and reap huge revnues, factories keep producing( increased vat receipts, workers pay more incomes taxes, spend in economy) When will these buffons with all the qualifications apply common economics and sense of doing things for once. The problem is with the status quo we will ALWAYS have these problems because these people in charge will be remembered by posterity as the biggest scourge and failure on the Ghanaian EVER. I wonder how you people in charge sleep at night- babies and mothers dying on operating tables becuase of erratic electricity supply and BASIC NECCESSITIES.
