The CIOB must strengthen its functions, attract and embrace many levels of members in the built environment so that can monitor and control building services - in terms of certification, attestation, etc.

Has that body being just formed? If not why are they now shouting? This is the typical Ghanaian story and no wonder both past and present Governments in the country refuse to give State construction contract to Ghanaian owned companies.
As a professional body, they should have taken a professional attitude to their professional practice long time ago. Such a professional body should have even initiated to government any eminent dangers in an unregulated area like the built industry. however their very unconcern behaviour has also helped the crooks amongst them. How many times those of us living outside Ghana do hear Ghanaian Construction companies crying loud that the Government of the day is ignoring them in award of contracts.
But is it not because of their own greed and undercutting any awarded contracts to them. It is always selfishness of Ghanaian businessmen that cause their downfall. Shabby performance of awarded contracts to Ghanaians is never new. Some years ago, I worked for COCOBOD and been in charge of Board Properties, it failed me to realise how crook we ghanaians can be.

IT is good idea to regulate the construction to ensure efficient use of modern engineering and technical skills and effective observation of health and safety standards in the construction industry in order to protect lives and property .the collaspe of melcom was due to negligence and greediness for money ,the building was constructed to be used as offices and not as shop and warehouse ,there was no risk assessment undertaken to identify any problems and again there were warning signs from the cracks of some supporting beams and pillars which were evident and reported to melcom but were ignored hence the collapse of the building and lost of innocent lives.

BUILDING CODE IS THERE TO ENFORCE INTERNATIONAL BUILDING REQUIREMENTS WHEN IT COMES TO ELECTRICAL, PLUMBING, SANITATION, GAS FITTING, TO MAKE SURE DURING CONSTRUCTION EVERY STAGE REACH BY THE BUILDER IS INSPECTED BY CITY OFFICALS WHO SPECIALIZED IN THAT PARTICULAR LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT. CITY STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS, ELECTRICIANS, PLUMBERS, SEWEAGE OR DRAINAGE ENGINEERS, FIBER OPTICS, UNDERGROUND GAS INSPECTORS ARE DEPLOID TO INSPECT BEFORE COMPLETION. WHEN THE BUILDING IS COMPLETED FINAL CHECKS ARE DONE BY DEVELOPERS AND OWNERS TO MAKE SURE DEFFICIENCIES ARE RECORDED, REPAIRED AND ELIMINATED BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION.
