If only Sam Jonah was as wise as you...we would be in a better position than we presently are.
Thanks for beating this drum time and again. We should have long had a MINING POLICY.

Mr. Aubynn has a great idea but he might be corrupt by the existing staff. If only he can stand firm and institute these kind of policies, it will help our rural communities a lot.
Over to you joe lartey!

The government gets over $3 billion from Corporation tax which is 25%-35% so why do you want to talk only about the meagre royalties?

If Ghana, a nation once called the Gold Coast because of its gold deposits and other minerals, in this day and age, some nearly 50 years since the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah cannot count on or point to legislation from its parliament and or past dictators like J.J. Rawlings that governs its mining sector then I say shame on us all.
What Dr. Aubynn ought to do is bring pressure to bear on our legislators/parliamentarians to re-evaluate, improve and or re-write existing statutes/legislation governing mining activities/industry in Ghana to bring us into the 21 century. Furthermore, Dr. Aubynn and his counterparts in the various mining sectors need to propose renegotiating existing mining contracts with foreign companies that do take advantage of our mineral resources and the lack of adequate mining regulations relative do environmental safeguards and water usage to ensure that profits being shipped out of Ghana cannot continue if Ghana's water usage and environmental replenishment activities are not adequate. The industry must be held to a standard that does not allow any operations to cause long lasting damaged and negative effects on mining communities. Ghana's Chamber of Mines should ensure that government has adequate, computerized systems and infrastructure to mandate that all transactions in the mining sector are conducted electronically so there are electronic foot prints that may be used by auditors and or government entities to aid in annual accounting overview and probity into management of the mining sector.
In my opinion, it is simply not enough to belly ache about standards if there is no mechanism to trace payments, sales, transactions and or mining data for real and true assessment of Ghana's minerals by Ghanaian firms and or foreign entities. Should Ghana be holding out tin cans begging civilized western nations for aid and loans when we have had minerals ever since the nation came into existence? We've allowed ourselves to be abused and misused because we've always had greedy Ghanaians in charge of anything that is seen as the golden egg/cash cow for our economy.

With a uniform corporation tax of 35% to be across the board, the government must give 10% of it directly to the minning community and environmental Fund. It is the only way to avoid future conflict which to me is inevitable if the government carries on neglecting the minning communities. 100 years of gold production what do we see, the gov't collects all the money from corporation Tax and gives nothing to the minning communites, this is Disgraceful.

I have just come from the UK on a visit to China. Travelling from Nanjin - the south city to Beijin the north city by train has been a revelation; you cannot buy a train ticket - a simple thing you do in the uk (without blinking an eyelid) without producing your passport if you are a foreigner or your ID if you are chinese.
You cannot travel with your bag without it going through a security scanner; everything is checked and security of the state is tight.
Can you imagine me just going to any part of china and start mining their gold if they have any? and especially if i entered the country as a visitor and suddenly started digging for gold as galamsey? It will not happen; I will be arrested and put in Jail.
Wherever one goes and whatever one does it is subject to legal and security checks. I am just baffled that Ghana can just sit back and allow illegal foreigners to do what they like in our country; destroying the environment.
Recently, 1.5 tonnes of gold left Ghana by air for Iran and stopped for refuelling in Turkey. The Turkish authorities checked the plane and it had no papers accompanying the gold; presumably stolen and illegally being taken out of Ghana. The turks have seized the plane, sealed the gold and waiting for answers. What is the Ghana government doing about this case?? Sweet fuck all; all we can talk about is pending NPP challenges at the supreme court about the elections.
