Public health monitoring and control in the abbatoir should be properly manned by properly trained and qualified veterinarians and not diploma-holding environmental health staff with less than a year of training in meat inspection, etc. The risks of problems like salmonelosis, anthrax, brucellosis, etc. require adequate and efficient control. Unfortunately, the policy makers are almost nought in knowledge.

Killing of different species on the same property could lead to an outbreak due to cross-contamination. Mayanka needs more than the stated amount unless they want to operate a mediocre slaughter house like they've been doing over the years. It is incumbent on the governmetn to provide at least one state of the art slaugterhouse facilities for every district and support them with well trained inspection staff and veterinarian for proper hadling of the meat products. We have vultures and crows, pest and vermins that troup to Mayanka everday! The land they have at the Mayanka is too big for the operations being conducted there. What Ghana needs is a very dedicated regulatory agency that will have the independence to regualate the meat industry with a solid mandate of safeguarding our meat and food supply in general. Ghana can consult Canada, USA, EU to get going at this proposal.
