The government is considering a policy to reduce the number of billboards at major road junctions and roundabouts, with plans to allow electronic advertising displays in selected areas.

The Minister for Local Government, Mahama Ayariga, said the move was aimed at addressing visibility challenges caused by advertising structures, which he believes make it difficult for motorists to navigate some roads safely.

He said the proposed policy would form part of broader efforts to regulate billboard installations and make the country's roads safer and less cluttered.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Ayariga explained that the growing number of billboards around junctions and roundabouts could obstruct drivers' views of approaching vehicles.

He said the proposed policy would not only target unauthorised advertising structures but also address billboards that had been legally approved but were still contributing to visibility challenges.

“Permitted for me is not an issue. The issue is that those billboards should not be there. We are in the process of reaching a conclusion that would allow only electronic billboards to be erected in certain areas.

“This is intended to reduce the number of billboards obstructing roundabouts and junctions,” he explained.

Ayariga said electronic displays could provide a better arrangement by allowing advertising companies to show multiple adverts on a single structure instead of installing several conventional billboards in the same area.

He added that the Ministry was prepared to engage the Advertising Association of Ghana to discuss the proposed changes and consider recommendations from industry players.

“These are some of the issues I am happy to discuss with the Advertisers Association. We’re all working towards ensuring that by March 2027, when we are celebrating our 70th anniversary,” he stated.
