I honestly do not understand this new 20% tax on digital services. How can consumers be taxed on services they have already subscribed to and are paying for with their Ghana-issued bank cards? Does this not amount to double taxation, especially where other taxes are already included in the cost of the service?
If this is the direction we are heading, then consumers may simply resort to using foreign-issued cards to make these payments. Let us see how effective this tax will be when people start moving their transactions away from Ghanaian payment cards.
It is disappointing that, at a time when countries are encouraging digital payments and promoting a cashless economy, Ghana appears to be making electronic transactions more expensive and less attractive. This is not how we should be promoting a modern digital economy.
The banks should also be concerned. Every time a policy makes the use of local payment cards less attractive, it risks driving transactions away from Ghanaian banks, reducing card usage and potentially affecting the fees and revenue generated from Visa, Mastercard and other payment networks.
You cannot claim to be promoting a cashless economy while introducing policies that discourage people from paying digitally.
Before introducing new taxes, the government should engage consumers, businesses, banks and other stakeholders, explain the rationale clearly, and assess the wider economic consequences.
Ghana needs forward-looking policies that encourage innovation, investment and digital financial inclusion—not policies that make ordinary consumers question whether using their local bank cards is still worthwhile. OH MOTHER GHANA

Not sure what you are complaining about, I have concerns if this tax will be used but from taxation point of view it's pretty standard. This is a digital service it's not like you can go toe their office and pay in cash. and if you buy from another country, you will be paying tax as well.

I think someone wants to destroy Mahama's goodwill. How can you tax ChatGPT and other AI services?
The GRA' Commissioners explanation on Joy FM does not make sense. He said NetFlix and others already collect VAT and remit to GRA but they are not sure of the real data on usage.
Don't we have data on card payments at BoG? Can't GRA compare what they get from Netflix to actual Netflix payments at BoG? If the data doesn't match, can't GRA draw NetFlix's attention? Why collect the VAT from banks when they are not the service providers? Is it legal?
This will cause floating voters to vote against NDC and guess what? NPP may come back. Mark my words. If NPP is smart, this is a God-sent 2028 campaign gift.
