The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced a major takedown of a suspected scam centre operation in Ghana, with nearly $10 million in losses identified so far.

The operation, carried out as part of the FBI’s global Operation Blackout, has led to 89 victims being identified, while more than 130 people have been arrested or detained.

The FBI also seized more than 300 devices as part of the operation. Some of those detained are victims who are expected to be repatriated to their home countries.

The FBI Director Kash Patel announced the latest development in a post on X, indicating that investigations into the operation are still ongoing.

“Another takedown this week out of Ghana: Nearly $10 million in identified losses so far - 89 victims identified - 130+ individuals arrested or detained (including victims who will be repatriated to home country) - 300+ devices seized,” he said.

Patel said the scam centres target American citizens and have caused serious financial losses and harm to victims.

“These scam compounds target American citizens and destroy lives,” he stated.

He added that the FBI is working to shut down such operations in different parts of the world.

“This FBI is crushing them in every corner of the world. More to come,” Patel said.

The Ghana operation forms part of the FBI’s wider Operation Blackout, which targets international scam networks and the compounds where workers are allegedly forced to carry out online fraud.

According to Patel, the operation has so far resulted in about $17 billion being seized, with hundreds of alleged scammers arrested.

Thousands of trafficked workers have also been freed, while more than 10,000 Americans have been warned before losing money to the scams.

The FBI estimates that its actions have prevented about $670 million in losses.
