Ghana’s proposed national airline could fly to countries in South America and the Caribbean in the future, President John Dramani Mahama has said.

He said the plan could help Ghana build stronger business and diplomatic ties with countries in the two regions.

President Mahama made the comments during a meeting with Suriname President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

He said Ghana’s location makes it possible to improve direct air connections with the Caribbean and South America.

According to him, travellers from Ghana currently have to take long routes through Europe to reach some Caribbean destinations.

He cited Jamaica as an example, saying a trip can take several hours because of connections through London.

President Mahama said a national airline could make travel between Ghana and the two regions easier by providing more direct connections.

The proposed routes could also create opportunities for trade, tourism and investment between Ghana and countries in South America and the Caribbean.

The government is currently working on plans to establish a national airline to improve Ghana’s international air connections.

However, any decision to operate these routes would depend on factors such as passenger demand, operating costs, aircraft availability and the commercial viability of the routes.
