Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has urged residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate ahead of the planned spillage of excess water from the dam on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

The company said the directive has become necessary after the water level at the dam rose to 45.2 feet, close to the 46-foot safety threshold.

GWL explained that the increase has been caused by heavy rains upstream of the dam and continued rainfall within the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.

The utility said the planned spillage is a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding the dam as water levels continue to rise.

It has therefore advised residents in affected communities to leave the area, remain alert and follow all official evacuation directives to avoid possible danger.

Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, as well as surrounding communities.

GWL has also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, residents’ associations and other stakeholders to take precautionary measures and prepare for the evacuation exercise.

“We are closely monitoring the water level and will continue to provide updates as the situation develops,” the company stated.

GWL stressed that the safety of residents remains its priority and urged the public to cooperate with the authorities throughout the exercise.
