The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has formally submitted a request to the Ministry of Transport for a review of public transport fares.

The request, made in collaboration with the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), is in line with the Administrative Instrument governing the determination and review of public transport fares.

In a press release dated September 3, 2026, and signed by the General Secretaries of the GPRTU of TUC, Ghana, Godfred Abulbire, and the GRTCC, Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, the transport operators said the process would involve consultations with the Ministry of Transport.

According to them, the review is part of an established framework for assessing the various factors that affect the operations of commercial road transport services.

“This process forms part of the established consultative framework for determining and reviewing public transport fares, taking into account various inputs that go into the operations of commercial road transport services,” the statement said.

The announcement comes at a time when transport operators and passengers continue to monitor developments in the cost of public transportation amid changes in the operating environment.

The GPRTU and GRTCC said discussions with the Ministry of Transport are expected to commence soon, after which the outcome of the consultations will be communicated to the public.

“We wish to assure the general public that engagement will soon commence with the Ministry of Transport and the outcome will be communicated in due course,” the statement said.

The transport operators have therefore appealed to drivers, station masters, transport owners and passengers to remain calm while the consultation process is ongoing.

“We therefore urge all drivers, station masters, transport owners, and the general public to remain calm and await the outcome of the process,” they said.

The statement did not announce any new transport fare or indicate the percentage increase being sought by the GPRTU.

Any adjustment to fares is therefore expected to follow the consultations between the transport operators and the Ministry of Transport, with the final decision to be communicated after the process is completed.
